Rolling Stone refuses to run ad for Bible
Thursday, January 20, 2005 Posted: 8:03 AM EST (1303 GMT)
GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan (AP) -- -- Rolling Stone magazine declined to run an advertisement for a new translation of the Bible aimed at young people, the nation's largest Bible publisher said Wednesday.
Zondervan, a division of HarperCollins Publishers, bought space in the magazine months ago as part of an ad campaign for Today's New International Version, said Doug Lockhart, Zondervan's executive vice president of marketing.
"Last week, we were surprised and certainly disappointed that Rolling Stone had changed their mind and rejected our ad," he said.
A telephone message seeking comment was left Wednesday at the New York headquarters of Wenner Media LLC, publisher of Rolling Stone.
Lockhart said Zondervan, based in Grand Rapids, paid Wenner Media last July to run the ad in February, when the Bible is due on bookshelves.
On Tuesday, USA Today quoted Kent Brownridge, general manager of Wenner Media, as saying his staff first saw the ad copy last week, and "we are not in the business of publishing advertising for religious messages."
Lockhart said the ad features the face of a contemplative-looking young man and includes this copy:
"In a world of almost endless media noise and political spin, you wonder where you can find real truth. Well, now there's a source that's accurate, clear and reliable. It's the TNIV -- Today's New International Version of the Bible. It's written in today's language, for today's times -- and it makes more sense than ever."
Media outlets that agreed to carry the ad include Modern Bride, The Onion, MTV.com and AOL, Lockhart said. AOL, like CNN.com, is a unit of Time Warner.

I read this this morning and I'm certainly not surprised. Rolling Stone has always had an anti-religous stance. Not to mention an ultra-left wing view of politics.

Rolling Stone Will Accept Ad for New Bible
By JAMES PRICHARD
Associated Press Writer
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) -- Rolling Stone magazine has reversed itself and agreed to accept an advertisement for a new translation of the Bible, the nation's largest Bible publisher said Tuesday.
Rolling Stone sent Zondervan a contract for a half-page ad in the rock magazine's Feb. 24 issue, said Doug Lockhart, Zondervan executive vice president of marketing. He said Rolling Stone gave no explanation for its change of heart.
A spokeswoman for Rolling Stone publisher Wenner Media LLC did not immediately return a call for comment.
Zondervan bought space in the magazine months ago as part of an ad campaign for a new Bible translation aimed at young people, called Today's New International Version. About two weeks ago, the publisher said it was told that Rolling Stone's policy was not to accept advertisements for religious materials.
Lockhart said the contract sent to Zondervan does not require it to make any changes to the ad, which features a contemplative-looking young man and says the new Bible is "written in today's language, for today's times - and it makes more sense than ever."
"We're thrilled," Lockhart said.
Other media outlets that agreed to carry the ad include Modern Bride, The Onion, MTV.com and AOL, Lockhart said.

I'm sure that since the first announcement, Rolling Stone has been busy with polls, focus groups and crunching numbers.
How big is the check from Zondervan?
How many more people will buy the magazine without the ad? How many will subscribe?
Will any subscribers cancel if the ad appears in the magazine? How Many?
I'm sure that RS thinks they can run the ad, cash the check and not have any serious loss of revenue.
It'd sure be interesting to see if that decision changes when current advertisers threaten to cancel because of the bible ads.

I do not see many new bibles ..... I guess sold, or maybe more to the point I do not see any large intrest being sparked on account
of the spot in that rag.
nor do I believe that many pholks really drink pepsi cause of the cool
