Routers

Post by captainjoe »

I just got broadband for one of my computers today and the cable company said that I would need a router to hook up the other computer. I do not have ethernet so I will have to use a USB port. What is the best way to hook it up? Do I have to have ethernet? I am looking to save money on this so any hints would be nice!

THANKS!

I just got a wireless router for my girlfriend for $30 (after rebates) from Circuit City.. Again though, ethernet... They must make 'em for USB though I'd have to imagine...

USB network connections s***...you should go ahead and just spend 15 bucks on a Network Card and just do it that way. And it is true..you do have to have the routert o split your connection in a safe and efficient manner

I've got a wireless at the house and office. However, if you're just using a desktop a simple router is all you need.

Mine was easy to install, but makes a lot of goddam noise
and leaves marks on the computer table.

Agreed. Stay away from USB, buy a NIC for your computer, the are cheap and easy to install and you won't be tying up a USB port. I have a wireless router at home and have 2 PC's and one laotop hooked up to it, works great!

make sure the router has a firewall in it too.

Network interface cards (NIC) are cheap as are routers.
A simple & secure yet useful & adequate brand is Lynksys~
they can be had cheaply from eBay
