John Prine Announces first leg of US Tour

Post by Goodman »

I've never seen John live as he has eschewed NYC for many years. It's looking good for a Town Hall appearance on June 15th. Other east coast appearances as well.

The avatar accompanying my post includes John, Jimmy & Steve Goodman.

Dusting off the CD's I haven't listened to in a bit. Time to do my homework. :-)
I know Jimmy Buffett, Jimmy Buffett is a friend of mine. Son, you're no Jimmy Buffett!

He's been debuting quite a few new songs in recent years and it looks like he finally has a new album on the way soon so you're in for a real treat.

He has great music, I have every CD that he has made.

His last album of all new studio material was Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings in 1995 so his new album (due sometime this year) has been a long time coming. He's one artist that doesn't put an album just because he's obligated to because of a record contract which is also one of the perks of owning your own record company (Oh Boy). I can't wait to hear it.

All right Seattle May 21st!!!!!!

Haven't seen him since the last tour he did with Steve Goodman, shortly before SG died. Had 2nd row seats for that one, way on the left but great seats nevertheless.

The last time I saw him he was on tour with labelmate Todd Snider. Todd had just lost his father around the same time Buffett's Dad passed away and Todd had poignant stories to tell about each. Prine even mentioned Buffett ("doesn't he sing a lot of songs about food?") during his set. I'd love to see Buffett collaborate with Prine as he used to with Steve Goodman especially since they were all such close friends with Steve at one time but I have a feeling that isn't likely to happen any time soon.

In looking over some of the venues John will play it reminds me some of Jimmy's salad days in the early to late 70's. Those intimate settings are where the legend of Jimmy Buffett was made. He was not yet a hit and I took pride in enjoying an artist who wasn't part of the commercial mainstream.

I miss those shows but I accept that somewhere along the way, Jimmy became a superstar and his running buddies only achieved mid-level success. Thi is still why I go to see John Prine, Tom Rush or Jerry Jeff Walker at Town Hall, The Birchmere or BBKings in NYC.

Some people just don't understand the appeal of seeing your favorite performer in a smaller venue but I'd much rather frequent those types of places than deal with the hassle of an amphitheater, stadium or arena. For me to venture forth into one of those places it has to be someone I really wanna see. Someone asked the other day why I don't go see Buffett any more and that is among the many reasons why. Guess I'm one of those that's holding out on that long promised theater tour. It may or may not ever happen but that's ok, I've done my time in the mega-domes.

I agree, I love the smaller venues. I missed a show Bubba did a few years ago here in Chicago at the House of Blues. Phriends of mine said the show was incredible, I can only imagine seeing him in such a cool, intimate setting at that, yet still with the entire band.

I know what you mean Jahfin.
John Prine usually plays The Florida Theatre in Jax. A wonderful old theatre, that has been renovated. Small, wonderful acoustics and not a bad seat in the house.
I have seen John Prine there 4 times...The Pretenders, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Melissa Ethridge, BB King......I am sure there are more, just can't think of them right now. OH! Keb Mo....(If you get a chance, go see him...just awesome!)

I prefer the small venue. It is more personal...
Leon Redbone is playing there the same night Jimmy is playing in Jacksonville....Might make it since I am going to Tampa....

I concur, Keb Mo is excellent. I saw him open up for Bonnie Rait. One of the better shows I have ever seen.
