Well, there's a meeting on March 3 of local citizens comprised of charter boat captains, local boaters, surfers, etc. and we now also have the support of one of our local congressmen so hopefully this matter will be resolved soon. Meanwhile, the dredging to shift the inlet continues...
A booster pump helps shoot dredge spoils from Bogue Inlet’s new central channel to Emerald Isle’s western shoreline. The homes along the inlet need sandbags to hold the existing channel at bay. The migrating waterway will be blocked with a sand dike, allowing the Point area to accrete sand. (Rich Levey photo) [/i]

we vacation at Emerald Isle. The Beach had gotten pretty small a few years back. high tide came right up to the dune I wasn't there last year but two years ago I was and they had been doing the dredging and the beach was much bigger.

I'm sorry, my last post was pretty lame, much like my other 4602 posts. I got all excited when I saw Emerald Isle and wanted to partisipate in the discussion.
Three years ago we were talking to the man who owns the house we stay in and I thought that he was telling us about them dredgeing the inlet and pumping the sand into the ocean to build the beach back up because the tide was coming in so far because of erosion caused by hurricanes the past several years.
Jahfin, it's cool for me to know that you are from the area that I love to go to for vacation. It is such a laid back, relaxing place for a family to go to.

Not exactly but sorta. They want to restore the shoreline to put some more beach between the homes and the ocean, not necessarily build homes in front of the ones that are about to fall into the water (if that makes any sense). What they're doing is f*cking with Mother Nature. As has already been mentioned, this is a barrier island which is naturally supposed to shift. In a few years it will shift but the real estate developers don't have the patience for that so they feel the need to intervene in the name of the almighty dollar. Not that anyone paid attention to him but years ago a local environmentalist (before that became a dirty word) wrote a book stating what would happen to homes built in the shifting sand. What's happening now is a result of that and it turns my stomach.
O.K. I read closer and now I understand the problem. But I can understand why people want to try to protect their property. But then again, nature must run her course.

The thing is, a lot of the property owners are from out of state, they just rent out the majority of homes along the beach. Their only concern is $$$$. If a storm comes and washes one of them away it's no problem to them, they just build 'em right back, the ecology be damned. A few years back a wealthy senator from another state pulled some strings and built a home on the ocean side of the dunes (which is illegal and also not very smart) so it was no surprise when the next major storm came along and washed his house into the ocean. Served him right as far as I'm concerned.

we have the same problems on long island.. houses on awesome beaches, and people trying to make them private.. evey year when the nor easter's hit and a couple get swallowed up, they get the state to pay for the damages..such a waste of beautiful coastline..
