Aerosmith guitarist steps up to the mike

Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry will release his self-titled solo album on May 3rd. The thirteen-track blues-rock effort is Perry's first under his own name since 1984's Once a Rocker, Always a Rocker, the third and final release under the Joe Perry Project moniker.

Perry admits that his own mortality was an impetus for finishing the new record. "I had this pile of riffs, but a song really isn't a song until you get lyrics and a melody on it," he says. "I thought, 'If my motorcycle hits a tree, my wife's gonna have nothing to put out.'"

After using three different lead vocalists for the Joe Perry Project albums, the guitarist took on the challenge of singing many of the Joe Perry songs himself. By writing in a lower register, he came up with songs that fit his deep voice, but he doesn't think Steven Tyler's job as Aerosmith singer is in jeopardy. "A lot of my riffs were originally written with Steven in mind," he says. "I work with one of the best rock & roll voices in the world, and my voice isn't anywhere near that.

The album -- which includes eleven Perry originals, including the uptempo single "Shakin' My Cage," plus covers of the Doors' "The Crystal Ship" and Woody Guthrie's "Vigilante Man" -- was recorded in the guitarist's home studio in Boston, a.k.a. "the Boneyard." Engineer Paul Caruso, who has worked on recent Aerosmith records, also served as drummer and co-producer.

Perry does not have plans for a tour to support the album, but that might be good news for Aerosmith fans. "I may end up not having the time," he says. "We're talking about going on the road with Aerosmith in September."

Perry Preps First Solo Album In 21 Years

The long-awaited solo album from Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry will see the light of day in the spring. The self-titled set, due May 3 via Columbia, boasts 11 original songs (including two instrumentals) and covers of the Doors' "The Crystal Ship" and Woody Guthrie's "Vigilante Man."

Previewed months ago during a visit to "The Howard Stern Show," the set is the fourth album Perry has made outside of Aerosmith. In the early-1980s, he released three albums as the leader of the Joe Perry Project, two on Columbia and one through MCA.

Unlike those past outings, "Joe Perry" finds the guitarist handling lead vocals throughout the album. The Joe Perry Project boasted a different singer on each of its albums ("Cowboy" Mach Bell, Ralph Mormon and Charlie Farren).

Along with vocals, Perry is responsible for all of the guitars, bass and keyboards. He co-produced the set with Paul Caruso, who also contributed drums and engineered the release, which was recorded in Perry's basement home studio, the Boneyard. The only other player on the set is friend Chris Noise, who Perry describes as "an old-school analog synth guy... who plays the string part on one ballad, 'Ten Years.'" Noise is a teacher at the Boston's Berklee School of Music.

"Seems like these days that when people go off and do a solo record, it's more the norm to bring in a bunch of all-star friends," Perry says. "But I already have the amazing fortune to play with one of the best singers in the world and the hardest rocking band on the planet.

"But also, the way these songs developed from the demos, they already had the sound I was looking for. And it was a refreshing challenge to work this way," he adds.

The new album's opening cut, "Shakin' My Cage," will be the first track promoted to U.S. rock radio stations.

Here is the "Joe Perry" track list:

"Shakin' My Cage"
"Hold On Me"
"Pray For Me"
"Can't Compare"
"Lonely"
"Crystal Ship"
"Talk Talkin'"
"Push Comes To Shove"
"Twilight"
"Ten Years"
"Vigilante Man"
"Dying To Be Free"
"Mercy"

Joe Perry sets solo album street date

Columbia Records is set to release Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry's new self-titled solo album Tues., May 3.

The album was recorded at the Boneyard, Perry's basement home studio in Boston. The album's 13 tracks include 11 new Perry originals as well as covers of The Doors' "The Crystal Ship" and Woody Guthrie's "Vigilante Man."

"It didn't occur to me to put this record out until Aerosmith decided to take a year off," said Perry about his new album. "It's as honest a record as you're gonna get. Most of the songs are love songs. Some of them are fast and some of them are slow, that's about it. You sing what you know."

Perry sings all the vocals and plays all the guitars, bass and keyboard parts on the album. He also co-produced the album with Paul Caruso, who recorded and engineered the disc and played drums.

Joe Perry is the fourth solo album from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee. His previous works—as the Joe Perry Project—include Let The Music Do The Talking (1980), I've Got The Rock 'N' Rolls Again (1981), and Once A Rocker, Always A Rocker (1984), all of which were recorded while Joe was on hiatus from Aerosmith.

Perry Rocks The Basement On New Solo Set

Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry didn't have far to travel when it came time to polish the material on his upcoming self-titled solo set. Instead of flying across the country or even driving to the other side of his Boston home base, he simply walked down the stairs and flipped on the lights in his basement home studio, the Boneyard.

"Part of my process for writing is, I like to go down and cover other songs just for the hell of it, just to see how they come out," Perry tells Billboard.com of the set, which was a largely solitary endeavor. "That's one of the benefits of having a studio at the house. There's nothing like being able to just go downstairs and get the guitar sounds I have in my head to come out of speakers and get them on tape."

The new album, due May 3 via Columbia, blends relatively recent compositions such as "Shakin' My Cage," "Lonely" and "Push Comes To Shove" with new versions of old, never-completed ideas. Perry says the closing instrumental, "Mercy," has been around in some form since sessions for Aerosmith's 1993 album "Get a Grip," while "Ten Years" was written "about 10 years ago for my 10th wedding anniversary, as a present for my wife. I never really planned on anybody hearing it other than her."

Also featured are covers of Woody Guthrie's "Vigilante Man" and the Doors' "Crystal Ship." Says Perry of the former, "It's a tip of the hat to one of the most important musical figures of the last century, in my book anyway. Hopefully somebody who doesn't know Guthrie will hear this and explore, or grab one of his records."

The artist recorded enough material that he was left with several extra tracks he says will hopefully form "the backbone of another record. I will definitely put out another solo record after this one. I'm not sure when, but I'd like it to be more sooner than later."

With Aerosmith set to reconvene in late summer or early fall to plot its next move, Perry admits a full tour in support of his album is "out of the question." However, he says he "may ask a few friends to sit in with me on a few dates to promote the record. It would be some guys I know that would play the sh*t out of the stuff and be able to knock it off pretty quick."
