There is Jimmy Buffett and there is Kenny Chesney.
Just like Honda and Nissan, Beatles and Stones, Target and Walmart, Britney and Jessica, Exxon and Citgo, etc.
Some people like one or the other and some people like both.
Nothing more than that, nothing less.
It is so funny to see people get bent out of shape about what other people enjoy.
Life is too short.....relax and enjoy whatever you want.

Question: "And now Kenny Chesney has recorded a beach album." Jimmy's Answer: "It's flattering. Some people say I should be p*** off about it but I'm really not. It's the highest form of flattery, and I'm fine with it."

Wow really! I'd never knew thatBoozeInTheBlender wrote:Jerry Jeff Walker??????? Who do you think gave Buffett his first taste if KW, when JJW took him there in the old Packard in the early 70's I would personally like the thank JJW for starting all this! And I'm sure Jimmy would too!sonofabeach wrote:I agree!!!
Don't these other tropical performers know that they are not allowed to write songs about the life they lead?
Jimmy has a copyright on the Caribbean and any songs that mention anything related to it.
The following artists should be sued:
Kenny Chesney, Eddy Raven, Jim Morris, Sunny Jim, Bertie Higgins, Jerry Jeff Walker, Barefoot Man, Gene Mitchell, Eric Stone, Mark Mulligan, and well over a thousand others that I can't think of at the moment.
The nerve of them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What I meant was JJW makes Texas country music, and made a tropical themed cd in 97 but it's not okay for Kenny or anybody else to.
Why did JJW make the cd?
Because he spends a lot on time in Belize and wanted to sing about it.
Same thing with Kenny Chesney, he spends a lot of time there and it's changed his life.
Do you think all of those photos of videos of him there over the last five or so years are computer generated.
Point being if JJW can depart what he normally does then so can Kenny are any other artist for that matter.
Let's face it, Jimmy does not make as many tropical themed songs as he used to or as many as I wish he did which is why I have no problem with the whole genre of "Islandesque" artists that are out there.
Heck I look forward to a Jim Morris release more than a Jimmy release(shhh don't tell Jimmy
Again, there is no copyright on island themed music. The more island music the better!!

Wow, you figured that out all on your own??? Guess you've never seen Crossroads with Chesney and Melloncamp, or the interview where Kenny says that it was a tribute to his favorite video and one of the reasons he covers "Jack and diane" in concert.Pirate Lookin' at 40 wrote:
Also, I think that John Mellencamp should sue KC as well. His video for "Young" looks an awful lot like the "Jack and Diane" video. But, what whould you expect from someone not talented enough to be original.

Nice to see a little spirited discussion. I am kind of glad there is someone with ready made exposure doing some island stuff. I personally don't really like Chesney as a performer, but there are a couple of good songs on this new album. I must say though, as I was driving my 13 year old home from school yesterday listening to it, she said " Dad, this guy is sure trying to be Jimmy Buffett". And Doxadive, Magic is a rip off of Blue Heaven, not that Crystal Gayle song.

Re: more commentary on KC v. JB
thats funny because I have all of the Buffett albums and the new Kenny Chesney one, and those songs that the author matched up with Jimmys don't sound anything alike, especially comparing "Boston" to "Fins". it makes me wonder if he's even ever heard "Fins"doxadive wrote:

Another thing KC vs JB
JB - PH Club seats through local clubs only.
KC - Fan Club access to tickets via pre-sale on his website. Not sure on particulars, how many available, scalpers buying them all, etc. but sounds like a good idea.

Did you get tickes for the JB tailgate in J'ville yet?? Last chance to buy this weekend. Desdamona has posted info under "Who's Going to J'ville"

I checked into the KC fan club but didn't join. It's $25.00 yearly dues. I believe the limit on tickets that you can buy presale is 6. And you aren't guaranteed anything but good view seats.Lou_A1A wrote:Another thing KC vs JB

I just don't get what the big deal is. I give Kenny credit for actually contributing to all of his song lyrics this time. I don't think any of his singles have been written by him. Mac McMcanally even wrote Back Where I Come From. I like what one critic said about the new cd, its more James Taylor on vacation then Jimmy Buffett. Buffett really does not write about the islands that much.

Please don't "get bent out of shape" about a supposed insult to someone who sure doesn't know who YOU are and could care less.a1aara wrote:Please don't insult the great James Taylor.nomad wrote:I just don't get what the big deal is. I like tossing this JB / KC stuff out there and watching the gloves come off
5. Jimmy Buffett
$36.5 MILLION
ON THE ROAD Loyal Parrot Heads helped canny businessman Buffett gross almost $29 million in his latest lap around the nation's amphitheaters.
ON CD His first-ever country album, License to Chill, debuted at Number One (a first for Buffett) and sold an astounding 1.3 million copies. Buffett releases his CDs on his own label, keeping far more profits than most artists do.
ON THE SIDE His Margaritaville chain of retail stores, nightclubs and restaurants generates an eight-figure income.
Last year's rank: 17
13. Kenny Chesney
$27.4 MILLION
ON THE ROAD The rising country hunk grossed $49 million on tour, despite a rock-bottom forty-four-dollar ticket price. More than 1 million people attended his seventy-three U.S. gigs, making this tour second only to Prince in tickets sold.
ON CD Chesney's When the Sun Goes Down was the top-selling country album of the year, moving 3.1 million units.
Last year's rank: 27
The above from Rolling Stones Top 50 of 2004.

Re: Big Kenny Fan
shortieblue20 wrote:As being a loyal Jimmy Buffett fan for the last 10 years (I'm only 24) and seen many of his concerts, I will have to disagree with all the Kenny Chesney bashing on this discussion board. Kenny Chesney is one of the best country singers out there and is very entertaining to see. As we all know that Jimmy isn't the youngest fish in the sea, and will not be around forever. Kenny is just simply picking up the pieces, and if I remember correctly, Kenny and Jimmy are friends and enjoy each others music. Everyone will have to face the fact that Kenny Chesney is the next Jimmy Buffett, but in his own way. There is no Kenny vs. Jimmy. One is a legend, one is a up and coming legend, both with great music!!
Buffett and Chesney Fan Out!

It is hard for me to believe all these pro-KC posts. I just read shortieblue20's post and almost had a stroke. If I knew for 100% sure that KC was in fact going to be the next JB, I would immediately burn all my JB cd's and memorabillia and pray to the Cosmic Baker (that reference probably went over shortieblue20 and KC's head) to wake up tomorrow stone deaf. Don't get me wrong. It's great to see a local guy make it but KC should try to be KC, otherwise, any singer or band with a huge cult following should be watching over their shoulder.
