Super Bowl watchers... your NON-football opinion please

Post by Desdamona »

OK... I know it's about the BIG GAME and all, but
Jacksonville has put so much emphasis on this
game as a "showcase for the city" that I was
wondering what effect the national exposure has
actually had on people's opinion. (Personally, I see
all this foolishness as a warm-up, dry run for the
Feb 22 Salty Piece of Land concert. )

Has your opinion of Jacksonville been altered
(or created) by the Super Bowl exposure? What
is your image of "my fair city" now?

Honestly, I didn't even know WHERE the Superbowl was until I read one of your posts the other day.....we always have a Superbowl party and where the game is is never really even on my mind.....I suppose it would be a good opportunity to showcase the city for the people that GO to the game.....
I'll just be jealous of the SUN!!

Jacksonville. Could have been in Timbuktu for all the attention I pay to the venue, Pat. I just love the game!

A lot of the reporters who have been assigned to Jacksonville to cover the 'Bowl have been complaining for a week-plus now about all of the city's inadequacies. Horrible taxi service, no central hotels, a lack of things to do, etc. However, regarding the residents, the concensus seems to be that you all are very hospitible and friendly.

I have never been to Jacksonville and the negative reporting does nothing to deter me from visiting sometime in the future. In fact, it sounds like my kind of city: qualified to hold a Super Bowl but with a small town feel and great people.

I have seen none of it (no idea why!)

My view on Jacksonville still remains

All I remember is going to the Brewery - with a severe hangover, and running outside and laying on the grass outside while I waited for everyone else.

When then joined in the union demonstration line outside the Brewery for a bit of fun

Only feeling I've gotten about what's going on in Jacksonville is from Connie (PH119)... While I love football, I have no real interest in the game (cause the Broncos aren't there ;) ) so I've not watched any of the pre-game stuff going on in the last 2 weeks.

They've showed some nice boat / waterfront shots on a few fades. That's ok by me.

I did see a piece on it today with Bill Geist at a lawn bowling tournament. It was hilarious!

I believe the game will be in Detroit next .....

Where is Jacksonville again?

In all honesty, the Super Bowl is not going to make me take my next vacation to J-ville. From living in Atlanta during the Super Bowl, the difference it makes is for those that are there for the Super Bowl. They will go back home and tell the stories of how good or bad J-ville was.

Dont buy into the Pre-Game, Game, Post-Game hype or any of it's marketing strategies so I'm not affected in the least... my only opinion of J'ville FL is my last experience there in 2000 while passing thru on way to St. Augustine on my wedding night...

well, one can imagine the bad taste left in my mouth from that memory

Being from New England, I watched my fair share of sports shows, listened to my share of sports radio and talked to friends who went down this year.

I'll preface my comment by saying I've never been to Jacksonville and am not at all familiar with the city other than what I've learned the past week. Based on all that, I'm afraid Jacksonville didn't come across very well. I'm pretty sure this wasn't the fault of the city, rather the fact the city shouldn't have chosen as a superbowl site because the infrastructure just wasn't there to promote such event.

The media was BRUTAL in saying the city lacked hotel room, taxi's, restauraunts, parking, etc. etc. for the crowds. The fact that national media were being put up in red roof inns 30 miles from downtown didn't help matters either.

Most of the people I heard on the radio and in talking in to my friends, they did say the native folks were very friendly with directions and recommendations.
Indecision may or may not be my problem....

I've been to JAX twice (the Beaches A1A Parrothead Club puts on a great holiday party) and the Super Bowl hype made me want to go back again. In fact, I want to go back so badly that I'll be there in 2 weeks. Oh, wait. That has nothing to do with the Super Bowl. I'm going to see some short bald guy sing.

At least with the Super Bowl people gone by then you won't have to stay on a cruise ship!
Seriously, from what I've heard of Jacksonville it sounds like a very nice town ... but definitely not in the same league as the other Super Bowl locales. Actually if I had my way, the game would have a permanent home in New Orleans ... now THAT'S a party town! 8)

As an NFL fan you can't seriously not know that the Superbowl was in Jacksonville, or that Jax is in Florida for that matter. I mean Jacksoville's had an NFL team for a decade. Jacksonville is not as small as some think and it's actually the biggest city in America landwise. The fireworks leading up to the big game were possibly the biggest in U.S. history, even bigger than the millenium celebrations. Goes to show you that rednecks like to blow stuff up  .Every single fan interviewed on tv said they loved it and were quite suprised considering that some were trashing it beforehand.

There were lots of concerts and parties going on so there was always something to do, but then I'm sure it's that way at all Super Bowls.
I really enjoyed "The Best Damn Sports Show Period" from the Landing in downtown Jax. I wish that I would have went to it, it looked like a lot of fun. Overall, I think the city went all out and did a great job, much better than expected. The local networks were all over the scene for days leading up to the game and it looked like a blast.
Not to mention the best halftime show I've even seen took place in Jax!
Of course I'm right down the road from Jax so I'm biased.
