Buffett and Sinatra
Woke up early this moring and turned on Radio Margaritaville and the first song to play was the classic "Mack the Knife." However it sounded like Jimmy and Frank Sinatra together. I waited till the set was done and heard that it was on Sinatra Duets II. I searched the internet and sure enough it was done in 1994 and being a parrothead since the mid 70's, I've never heard this recorded song.
I did hear Jimmy once say in a concert when he was thinking about retirement something to effect of, "I just saw old Blue Eyes play and if he can still do it, I won't stop until I can't do it myself anymore." So what does this all mean about this being the so-called farewell tour?

That is a great song. I am also a pretty big Frank fan, a much bigger Buffett fan but I think that they did a great job on this song. Frank did that song with Jimmy in 1998 at the age of 78 he sounded pretty frigin good for 78, he died almost 4 years later at 82 4/12/98.

For anybod who lives in the Boston or Cape area Saturday nights they have a great radio show on 99.1 called Strictly Sinatra 7-midnight 5 hours of his greats.

For those of you unfamiliar with Duets and Duets II...I am a big fan of Frank Sinatra and Jimmy Buffett..but I didn't buy either of these albums....Sinatra went and recorded his songs, and then the other artists recorded their trakcs...and they were mixed together...so to me non of them is really a duet... it was no different than natalie Cole singing along with her dad on "Unforgetable".... there were actually quite a few artists who backedout because Frank refused to record a "real " duet with anyone

Was Frank like just hanging out in the corner. What was it like havingtequilatom wrote: INTRESTING INFO,I GREW UP WITH SINATRA IN OUR HOUSE.
him just hangin' out there constantly?
Just kidding of course, My Mom is a HUGE
Sinatra fan and has ALL his music. Her Sinatra influence kinda rubbed
off on me, I now have a lot of Franky music and listen to him pretty regular.
Like me with JB, she always wanted to meet him. She never
did, however she did get to see him front and center at Ceasar's Palace.
Closer than I'll ever get to see Jimmy!

I love Sinatra. Saw him in Vegas, baby. Wow. What a showman he was. Sail on Francis.
Gentilly ... 42 years is a long time to wait .... a Northeast Texas woman can hope.

I was lucky enough to see him three times. The first time, around '86 or '87 with my grandparents he was great. The second time I saw him there was a definite drop off, but how could you blame him, he was getting up there in years. The last time unfortunately was very dissapointing. Someone close to him should have told him to hang it up, becuse it was a really bad performance. I was just glad I got to see him when he still " had it".East Texas Parrothead wrote:Kinda takes away some of the "magic," huh?weirdo0521 wrote:I've heard them. and knowing how they were recorde made me really notice that it wasn't a true duet.tequilatom wrote:INTRESTING INFO,I GREW UP WITH SINATRA IN OUR HOUSE.I DO HAVE THE DUET I & II CD'S.THEY ARE ACTUALLY PRETTY GOOD.weirdo0521 wrote:For those of you unfamiliar with Duets and Duets II...I am a big fan of Frank Sinatra and Jimmy Buffett..but I didn't buy either of these albums....Sinatra went and recorded his songs, and then the other artists recorded their trakcs...and they were mixed together...so to me non of them is really a duet... it was no different than natalie Cole singing along with her dad on "Unforgetable".... there were actually quite a few artists who backedout because Frank refused to record a "real " duet with anyone

I knew this when I bought both CD's right as they came out. Didn't matter tho. There's nobody quite like Old blue eyes, no matter who he sings with(or who they mixed in) On both CD's the most powerful song, in my opinion, is Bewitched with Patty Labelle. OMG what a set of pipes that woman has. She is totally awesome.

The duets from LTC were recorded this way, also. Jimmy laid down his tracks and the other artists came in and sang the song, and then the two tracks were spliced together. Granted, Jimmy was there when some of the artists were recording, but they didn't record in the traditional fashion for duetsweirdo0521 wrote:For those of you unfamiliar with Duets and Duets II...I am a big fan of Frank Sinatra and Jimmy Buffett..but I didn't buy either of these albums....Sinatra went and recorded his songs, and then the other artists recorded their trakcs...and they were mixed together...so to me non of them is really a duet... it was no different than natalie Cole singing along with her dad on "Unforgetable".... there were actually quite a few artists who backedout because Frank refused to record a "real " duet with anyone

I am also a fan of both The Chairman of the Board as well as the Mayor of Margaritaville. My parents were Sinatra fans and I heard him on the old RCA record player while growing up. I have a lot of his stuff, including a double autobiographical album he released in the 1960s in which he tells about his life between the songs. Two of my favorite Sinatra songs are "One More for the Road" and his version of "Ebb Tide;" no one sings like Sinatra!
There's a very good book about the Sinatra style called "The Way You Wear Your Hat" in which he imparts his rules for living -- a must read for every American male.

There is an interview of Jimmy talking about recording this song... and he said he got it in the first take! He also said he improvised where he said...its Jimmy (over Frank's voice).... Have to listen again to know exactly where it was.
