My two cents worth: It has been said that joking about a tragedy is society's way of dealing with it, perhaps a coping mechanism. I'm not so sure it's just not an excuse for the apparent overabundance of insensitive people in this world.
OUR friends lost friends and relatives in the nightclub fire. That fact alone should have stopped the wisecracks. Instead they get told to lighten up. I wonder what the scenario would be if the shoe was on the other foot and it was YOU who lost a loved one. Would your response to the jokes be any different? I'm pretty sure it would.
This is a sensitive topic for many folks. Let's take the high road when posting on this thread and others like it.

When I was 20 years old my best friend ran out of gas on the highway. He was walking on the shoulder of the road and was plowed over by an 18-wheeler who's driver fell asleep. He, obviously, was killed. When I was 25 years old, my then best friend was driving on a slippery road and went off into a tree and was killed instantly.Brown Eyed Girl wrote:I wonder what the scenario would be if the shoe was on the other foot and it was YOU who lost a loved one. In both cases after the initial shock, myself and the people who knew them made jokes like, "Hey Tom, look out for that truck" and "Hey Heather, we told you chicks can't drive"! Why would we be so evil and terrible? Cause that's what they would have wanted. Neither of them would have wanted us to wallow in our own self-pity for the rest of our lives, they would have wanted us to stay positive and refer to them in a joking manner. It's my opinion that most people feel the same way. Anyone who would prefer people to be miserable forever following their death is just screwed up...
And for the record, if I meet an untimely demise and can get on the internet from hell, I better log onto BN and see you people joking about me and not having a damn pity party.
So, try a different approach than "if the shoe was on the other foot", cause that crap doesn't wash with me. I've been there. And if you choose to deal with death differently than me, that's fine, but don't put me down for how I deal with it.

Just because someone is a celebrity doesn't make them any different than anyone else. When someone dies, somewhere a spouse, and/or other loved ones are griefing over their loss. Meanwhile people participating in the pool are profiting from someone else's misery by gaining monetarily. That's what I find offensive about it.st.somewhere wrote:What exactly is the problem? It's not like anyone is wishin' ill will towards anyone. Death is a natural occurence. It'll happen to me. It'll happen to you. It's inevitable. Why is wrong to guess who'll be the next to pass on to the next stop?
I've seen people repeat this several times even though I never made a selection in the Death Pool. Asking if Abe Vigoda is still alive and actually making a selection are two different things. I suggest you folks get your facts straight before making such an accusation next time. For the record, he's still alive. I saw him make a cameo appearance on some late night talk show last week, methinks it was Conan O'Brien.Jahfin wrote:Also, I find it funny that for something that offends you so, you had no quams when it came to making a Death Pool selection in the first round.

You of all people should know I never made a selection in the Death Pool especially since you're an active participant and where there when I asked the question. I'm going to ask you as politely as I know how to please not continue to perpetuate what you know is a total falsehood. Thanks.nycparrothead wrote:I wondered the same thing...st.somewhere wrote:Also, I find it funny that for something that offends you so, you had no quams when it came to making a Death Pool selection in the first round.

So, since you were so offended by the thread, what exactly was the intent of your post requesting Abe Vigota's life status? Perhaps you should have asked it somewhere else, since our thread offended you so...Jahfin wrote:Aside from asking the aforementioned question, that's the only time I've ever visited that thread.

Well said and I see your point more clearly now but I'm the kinda fella who's always been afraid to lie about the death of a distant relative to get out of work or shcool for some unfounded fear that it might actually come true. On the other hand,"gallow's humor" has always been a part of our society and as someone else said, is a sort of coping mechanism. I know I've heard my fair share of Challenger jokes over the years. What makes joking about the RI nightclub fire different is that people that it directly affected are part of BN so I can see where they'd fail to see the humor in it. As an active club goer, it forever changed how I look at things when I go out to see live music. Now, instead of scoping out the where the bar is first, I'm looking to see where the fire exits are.nycparrothead wrote:When I was 20 years old my best friend ran out of gas on the highway. My intent was, to find out if he was still alive. As for the latter part of your question, I used Google and found a site that tracks celebrity deaths to get the answer to my question. Just because I asked doesn't in any way imply that I ever intended to take part in the Death Pool.nycparrothead wrote:So, since you were so offended by the thread, what exactly was the intent of your post requesting Abe Vigota's life status? Who was it that first said:
"Tragedy plus time equals Comedy"?

And Where each person's concept of
and
differ, that makes the formula infinitely insoluable for the universal set.
