Country singer Sammi Smith dies at 61

OKLAHOMA CITY The country singer best known for the hit, "Help Me Make It Through the Night," has died.

Jewel Fay "Sammi" Smith was 61. She won a Grammy award in 1971 for the song written by Kris Kristofferson. It helped establish him as a leading Nashville songwriter, and was voted single of the year by the Country Music Association in 1971.

Smith said in a 1981 Associated Press interview the song brought her prestige, satisfaction and "paid for a few meals."

She had other hits with "Then You Walk In" in 1971 and "Today I Started Loving You Again" in 1975.

Smith died Saturday at a hospital in Oklahoma City. Her funeral is Wednesday.
