The players helped too. The NHL gets almost no TV money but the average salary is higher than in the NFL. Sure, there are only 20 players on a hockey team but they also don't play in 70,000 seat stadiums. How did they think they could sustain that?

Remember the last work stoppage (strike/lockout can't remember) and Chelios was interviewed at a pick up game and said something to the effect of "...he has kids and a wife , you'd think he'd be nervous for their safety"

later he retracted (kind of ) those comments.

PS our street hockey league starts up in 3 weeks if he's hanging out in western NY for the next few months

I agree, its a sad, sad day. I agree with most of these comments.

The owners should never agreed to these salaries. The NHL does not bring is NFL dollars, and therefore should not be paid as much as other sports like baseball and basketball.

A cap does need to be in place and the great dumb@#$ commish should have stepped in years ago and taken action so this never happened but good ol Gary is a spineless weasel that knows as much as a chimp on crack, eh!
