Jimmy Buffett ripoffs.....
Brent Burns, The Key West Band, Jack Johnson and of course Kenny Chesney.
All of these have one thing in common. They all want to sing songs like Jimmy Buffett. And they all have a right to sing any song they want to sing.
But, here is the problem that I have with it. All of them have led the beach and island lifestyle except for...you guessed it...Kenny Chesney!!
He's from Tenneessee. Last time I checked there are no oceans in Tennessee. These other guys have lived that lifestyle and have never changed their musical style to mimic someone else.
Kenny Chesney singing about the tropical lifestyle is like me singing about driving a dumptruck. Sure, I can sing it. But, I don't know what I'm singing about.
So, keep in mind that with Chesney, it's just words and music without any credibility or roots behind it.
Simply put, he is a product of the music business. Nothing original.

I've stayed out of most of the Chesney discussion, but just this once I'll toss in my 2 cents.
Chesney's "island" music to me just doesn't have the same heart behind it as Jimmy Buffett's. I listen to Jimmy, I get a picture of what he's singing about. It's believable. I hear Kenny, I hear a song. No more, no less. Nothing wrong with the songs, but they just don't give me the same warm feeling as most of Jimmy's.

Hello, I mean no disrespect to you Shrimper John. I firmly believe everyone is entitled to their own opinion. However, just so you know Kenny Chesney owns a home in the Virgin Islands and that is where he lives when he is not touring. He has for a number of years now. And if when you say he is from Tennesse, well yes he is, but JB is also from Mobile.

No disrespect taken. But Kenny was migrating toward the beach music before he bought property in the Virgin Islands. It just appears to me that he is trying to change his image mid-career. I hate seeing people use country music to make their name and then change once they are known.

That's understandable... thanks for explaining, even though I like Kenny, I understand your frustration better.Shrimper John wrote:No disrespect taken. You're absolutly right on that one...He RENTED for MANY YEARS before finially decided to buy his own place. However, he didn't start singing or writing tropical songs until AFTER he discoverd the "Island Life" for himself.Shrimper John wrote:But Kenny was migrating toward the beach music before he bought property in the Virgin Islands.

My copy and paste response to all things "Kenny wants to be blah, blah, blah" from now on:
I believe what happened is that KC had a life changing moment. He did not write many, if any, of his songs in the beginning. He did pick the songs that became 2 Gold, 2 Platinum, 1 Double Platinum, 2 Triple Platinum and 1 Quadruple Platinum selling albums. Give him some credit for that.
Then he had a chance to get away with the tons of money he stockpiled and ended up in the islands. Over his time spent there he penned the songs from his current album. All his own, all about the people and places he met and found in the islands. The atmosphere and lifestyle changed how he felt about his life, how to live and what songs to write.
No more, no less.
This is where he is with his life.
It has nothing to do with JB other than a similarity in style, which is shared with many songwriters and artist's these days.

Question: "And now Kenny Chesney has recorded a beach album." Jimmy's Answer: "It's flattering. Some people say I should be p*** off about it but I'm really not. It's the highest form of flattery, and I'm fine with it."

That's the BEST, most logical, well thought out response I've heard yet!
