I believe what happened is that KC had a life changing moment. He did not write many, if any, of his songs in the beginning. He did pick the songs that became 2 Gold, 2 Platinum, 1 Double Platinum, 2 Triple Platinum and 1 Quadruple Platinum selling albums. Give him some credit for that.
Then he had a chance to get away with the tons of money he stockpiled and ended up in the islands. Over his time spent there he penned the songs from his current album. All his own, all about the people and places he met and found in the islands. The atmosphere and lifestyle changed how he felt about his life, how to live and what songs to write.
No more, no less.

It has nothing to do with JB other than a similarity in style, which is shared with many songwriters and artist's these days.
That's the BEST, most logical, well thought out response I've heard yet!

From an interview with Jimmy Buffett:
Q: And now Kenny has recorded a beach album, last week's No. 1 Be As You Are, in which he tries to be you.
A: It's flattering. Some people say I should be p*** off about it but I'm really not. The beach is free. As I said before, I was the first singer to go to Key West, but I certainly wasn't the first writer. As shameless plagiarists we all steal from everybody else; that's part of the process. I consider that a good thing. Hell, I stole from Harry Belafonte and Gordon Lightfoot and Joni Mitchell. ... It's the highest form of flattery, and I'm fine with it.
Enough said.

The problem with DAC and a lot of the public was his party lifestyle and his star f*cker club he had back in the mid to late 70's. A lot of people were very turned off by his attitude and pretty much refused to open themselves up to his music. I remember hearing people say stuff like - oh DAC he's that jerk isn't he?

I've heard all of them and they are not bad songs at all but they are not even close to being the greatest "buffett style" songs of all time.lookingat40 wrote:Truth is David Alan Coe did it far better than Chesney 25 years ago and he got critized for it...and he lived in Key West...He recorded some of the best "Buffett" style songs of all time but no one has probably heard any of them other than Divers do it deeper.

From a Blake Shelton interview
Q. "Some Beach" drew a lot of Buffett comparisons - not as much as Kenny Chesney, of course. But what's your take on that?
A. I know why people say that. I just don't know if they know why they're saying it. It's entertaining to me that people think Jimmy Buffett has a copyright on the ocean. I mean, I love him and all, but when I listen to "Some Beach" I hear more of a Bellamy Brothers influence, or as far as the feel of the track, Don Williams. I actually mention Margaritaville in the song, so that's a no-brainer, too.
Kind of a funny song though
Oddly enough, first time I heard it and saw the video was in Key West at MoTM last November.

Buffett rip offs
I just joined this forum but this has irked me for some time now. Chesney would love for most people to belive he started this whole Carribean Cowboy image. If you look at some of the images in his videos you can see Buffett and JJW everywhere. The Blue chair imagery is right off the cover of A1A. It's easy to buy a house in the islands after you make some money, hell when I make some money I'm headed to Costa Rica and then probably start writing about how I've been Island my whole life. In a few years, sooner I hope, Chesney will be gone and and he won't even be remebered. Then we can sit in peace and quiet and listen to JB and JJW without all the BS that now seems to surround this new Island Country or Carribean Cowboy music. Just my two cents. Sorry if I have offended any new listeners to this music or life style.

Welcome to Buffet News Macquarrie. I never understand why people discount the opinions of a newbie. Hell we were all a newbie at one point. Let me just say this though. I agree with you 100 percent. I have butted heads with several people, moderators included, in this forum over this very topic. My argument has always been that KC has the right to make any music that he wanted to make, but my belief is that he is positioning himself to "inherit" the parrothead crowd whenever JB calls it a day. I have always maintained that the majority of the parrotheads would not accept KC as an alternative to JB, especially the ones that were not into country music. You really need not look any farther than this website to proove that point. Out of all of the posts that take place on BN each day, very very few are in the KC forum. There is a very small minority of people here who really like KC and the rest, I believe, could not care less about him. If he were really gaining attention from JB fans, I would think that the KC forum on the biggest JB board would have a little more activity than it does. So finally, I am at peace with the whole KC thing. But, if you do intend to continue to post anti KC topics, be assured that you will take alot of heat from the previously mentioned minority. Once again, welcome aboard!!

The bottom line is, if it sounds good, it sounds good. Forget everything else. Maybe.....just maybe, Kenny actually likes the ocean and the music just like many of us do. Maybe it has had an effect on him much like becoming a parrothead did on me and a host of others.
I never cared about learning guitar, boating, and some other things until I got into Jimmy's music but that does not make me a wanna be, just inspired. And I have no problem at all with Kenny being inspired by Jimmy since I was/am too. I also don't think that there has to be another Jimmy Buffett.
There are artists that make music very similar to Jimmy and that's great since I love island music. The more island music the better is my philosophy on this. I've had alternatives to Jimmy well before Kenny got island fever, but I'm all for him getting into it even if Jimmy was part of the inspiration, big deal.
When Jimmy retires or dies within the next 10-20 years do you want there to be no "Buffettesque" or "islandesque" music being made?
Who has your seal of approval?
btw
Kenny was on the title track of Jimmy's latest cd, Jimmy appeared on Kenny's tour, and some guy named Robert Greenidge (look him up) plays on Kenny's cd.
I can't believe they'd associate with that wanna be.....
