The reason this matters is because the smarter the dog, the more it needs to be constantly entertained. If you leave a smart dog alone in a yard, it will spend the day trying to figure out how to escape. Less smart dogs will be content to lay around and play with you when you want to play.

We have a big yard and will be building a dog-run. Between my son and my daughter, our doggie will get played with PLENTY! But I do see what you mean. I really like dumb drooly dogs!

Kerry Blue Terriers are also adorable and shed relatively little.
Thanks! I'll check into those.

I think you'll also find your lab will be very receptive to your new baby. Our golden slept in front of my daughter's door every night. She just knew it was her job to protect her!

Be sure you check with the local authorities. We had a dog run for a while. Then someone called the humane society and they told us we couldn't keep our dog on a run. Then we installed a underground electric fence. Surprisingly, they didn't have a problem with that one.

interesting. I've never heard of dog-runs not being OK. it's a pretty big area anyway. thanks for the advice. we definitely won't do electric fence though.

The electric fence worked, right up until my dog figured out that it only shocks him as he crosses it. After that, it was over. You could see him hesistate on one end of the yard. Then he took off, full speed towards the other side. You heard a quick yelp before he was gone. The problem was is that he wouldn't come back to the yard because he would get shocked again. Sometimes it pays to have a dumb dog.

I have experienced this with our lab. The very first day we left her alone to go to work--she was 10 weeks old--I came home for lunch and she had escaped the room we put her in. We had put up a baby gate, and she escaped. She's learned now that that room is "her" room and she likes it in there now, but she is quite the Houdini. We have to leave LOTS of toys, etc. to keep her entertained while we're not around. She also likes to try to dig out of the fence in the yard, if we leave her out there. Hubby has filled in lots of wholes out there.

A standard poodle is probably as tall, but not as broad, as a German shepherd. And poodles were originally bred as hunting dogs.
So were cocker spaniels.
My sister has 2 cocker spaniels. Not my favorite dogs in the world. Too yippy.

she didn't train them right then. I've had 2 cockers and they were great.

I also have heard that dobermans are great with families provided you give them training.
Well...(said in my best Bubba voice) I've been on sabbatical.

here is a pic of my 10 month Bully AJ with his new boots...

I read up on them a while back. Seemed like a really good match for our family. I'll check into those some more!
He's growing up good RAGTOP! Nice outfit!

I was gonna recommend a bulldog too. Our ol' Otis (yes, after Otis Sistrunk Troy), was a great pet, especially for kids. He did die shortly after his 8th bday however.

Big O looked quite similar to this year's Westminster Champion Super Nova Hernandez...

...except his nipples weren't as big! :o

Good luck on the search Mal! My family wants another bully as well, but they aren't cheap around these parts, and we didn't hit any superbowl pools.

I'm afraid to hit the submit button - gonna laugh my ass off again at that darn pic j posted!

Super Nova is a great Bully. They never get any respect at Westminster, of course I think they should win every dog show so i'm a bit bias :D

Mal - If you decide to go with a rescue puppie check out Lifeline Puppy Rescue. This is where we got both Chase and Morgan. They are a no kill shelter and travel to the surrounding states to pick up litters of puppies that would have been euthanized. Needless to say you may have to make a couple of trips in order to find the puppy that is right for you - but the place is awesome. Here is the link to their website http://hometown.aol.com/irsqk9s/ Be sure to click on the link that tells you what puppies they currently have.

Good luck and be sure to have "Welcome home puppy party" :D
