Luck or skill?

Post by moeron »

Is it luck or skill in getting the really good seats? Every year My wife stands in line, I go online while both of us are calling tm. Am I wasting time standing in line. Or is it mostly luck getting the center seats. I don't mean selling a kidney to pay for it?

every time i go to a show, buffett or others, i go with out tickets. i usually get good seats, sometimes at face value, sometimes a little beyond face value, but never the price the person i buy from had in mind.
you have to know where you would like to sit (seating chart), you should know the face value of where you want to sit, and you should decide how much beyond face value you are willing to spend.
and then you should learn to negotiate.
good luck

I say it's a combination of the two.

Definately!

Also, keep in mind that alot of people will pull up seats and either their credit card won't work or they will just give the seats up for whatever reason.. So just because you pulled up lawn seats on your first try doesn't mean that you won't pull up great seats a minute or two later. I usually have about 4 windows open and make sure that one of them has tickets ready for me to purchase (watch that time limit though or ya lose em) and then in the other windows I keep checking to see if I can get better seats...

I would argue that, like life, its all about who you know.

After that, you sometimes have to play the TM games. Sometimes they hold the best tickets for closer to the show. Other times, they best seats are available 5-10 minutes after they go on sale.

A combo of both for sure. With TM, I've found it's better to not search by "best available". It takes the system longer to search the entire venue. I go to whatever option I'm looking for (i.e. lawn, pavillion, etc...) and click on that option. This way the system searches only in that section and not the entire place. It's usually quicker, and I usually get what I'm looking for.

To get the best seats, all you have to do is get licensed as an official Ticket Scalper, I mean Ticket Broker.

Of the good seats that are available, I'd have to say just blind, out-house luck. Just remember, it's you against A LOT of other people in a very short period of time to get the best seats. You're up against pretty steep odds to get the best.

This is definitely the case. When Vegas went on sale, I had 3 windows open with T!cketBa5t@rd beginning 15 minutes before tickets even went on sale. I just kept refreshing each one until the sale started. I then purchased the best available from my 3 windows within the first few minutes.

The NEXT day, I went back to TB to compare availability. There were better seats available the 2nd day, than there were on the first. My guess is as you said, people submitted a credit card then lost their seats later in the day if their card didn't work.

But, as I tell all my friends, a Buffett show is a cultural event. You don't need to be front row or floor seats to enjoy the ambiance. Granted, it is the best place for the full effect, but not a necessity.

Luck and skill. The ultimate test of nerves is tossing tickets back into the pool and searching for new ones. However, there seems to be a moment about 45 minutes into the onsale when seats start popping up after computer illiterates mess up ordering.

If Santa Barbara is any example it's neither. I think it's whether you're a ticket broker (read: scalper) or not.

I'm going to have to go with luck. Last year we all stood in line at different places and my sister-in-law happened to be first at her place and we ended up getting front row!
That was luck for sure!!!
