Spring Break

Post by DazedNiteman »

I'm trying to decide where to go for spring break this year. Me and three of my friends want to drive somewhere and have fun. Help us think of somewhere to go that isn't exactly a tourist trap or overly crowded and expensive.

Work was slow today so I made a list of some cities that may be of some interest:
Jacksonville, FL
Pensecola, FL
Punta Gorda, FL
Savannah, GA
Charlotte, NC
Phoenix, AZ
Tallahassee, FL
Scottsdale, AZ
Dallas and Houston, TX
New Orleans
Birmingham, AL

EDIT: add Fort Lauderdale and Key West in there, I just looked and both look nice plus spring training is around Ford Lauderdale and Jupiter. Any idea how touristy it is and how expensive it'd be? END OF EDIT

I'm leaning to florida more because I want to try and catch some spring training games while we're down there. Also, anyone have any idea how expensive it will be to go fishing down there far out in the ocean? It can be as a part of a big group or whatever but the cheaper the better but one thing that I have always wanted to do was spend a day out on the ocean fishing and relaxing.

Anyone have any ideas and things we could do? note: 3 of us are seniors in high school and one freshman in college so no bars (legally) lol

WOOOOOO PCB (Panama City Beach for those who are a little slow  ) for us this year...we usually just hit Daytona..but now since I live here..well there..whatever..It's going to stink..it has been getting progressively worse every year.

as for your Punta Gorda choice..I would scratch tht..they are probably still pretty banged up from those hurricanes..hell there's still hotel in Daytona that have not opened back up yet
All I need are some tasty waves, a cool buzz & i'm fine

spring break destination

Post by Momshell »

For me, Spring break trips should be warm and sunny. Anything north of central Florida will not be warm enough to get out and enjoy the beach. Miami( South Beach) is the warmest place to be in the Southeast, and the nightlife is awesome. Can be a bit pricey, but if you stay in Miami Beach
(a few miles north), you can get less expensive lodging and get down to South Beach (an easy car ride) for the fun. Try hotels.com or some other clearing house for a quick screen on room prices for most hotels down there. I go every Spring ( now with my family), and there is something for everyone- bars and clubs if that is what you want, or white beaches, pools, jet-skis, the Seaquarium, etc., for family oriented activities. Have a great trip!

Naples is more family/retiree/upscale. Not really a "Spring Break" destination, though quite lovely.

Then what's the point of going anywhere for Spring Break?

Seriously, you could do the Redneck Riviera (PCB) or Daytona but that's a long way for seniors in high school. I would just look for some amusement park because its likely not everyone's folks will let you drive 1000 miles.

definitely do not do Jax.
If you're looking for the wilder T&A type crowd try the Redneck Riviera like Landshark said.

I know that 3 parents have said its alright and the last hasn't asked. I know that I want to go because the South Dakota winter is depressing and my AP Physics 2 and AP Calc classes are too stressful for me and I need to get going south. That's why I will be going to college in georgia so I will be in a warmer climate. I put Birmingham on the list because it seemed like a nice historic type of city. I just want to go somewhere relaxing. I've been saving up money from work so I'm ready to get some nice R&R. I'll check out some of the places you all have said.

Well if you are coming all the way to Florida from South Dakota you might as well hit the Keys.

Couple of problems here...1) spring break not overly crowded and expensive, and b) you're a sprout..but you know what? I got a couple of suggestions...I know it's not on the list, but the Tampa Bay area has everything you want. If you stay inland rates will be a bit cheaper, and if you stay at the Hampton Inn by the St. Pete/Clearwater airport, they may even pay you to stay there......but you will have a blast at Clearwater Beach...your age group (well, maybe mine too  )...and as far as baseball is concerned, Blue Jays, Phillies, Yanks, and that sorry a$$ team the Devil Rays, all are in the area...

Now, regarding the fishing part, I may be able to help you out with that...should this be your destination of choice over, oh, let's say "Dallas", I think I can hook you up, no pun intended... :D I gots connections...

You may have some trouble finding a place to stay. Most hotel, house/condo rentals, etc. require at least one person to be at least 25 years old. Good luck!

Why is Charlotte on your list? It sucks, stick to the beach scene.

As someone said earlier - scratch Punta Gorda off of your list. We were down there for New Years. They have a long way to go to get back to normal and all the hotels were destroyed so you wouldn't find a place to stay unless you could find a condo rental. You could however, find a hotel at Cape Coral which is south of PG and that would put you close to Ft. Myers and the Captiva/Sanibel area.

The Tampa/St. Pete area is also very good.

Have fun!

I didn't know this, I thought you had to be 18. I thought I heard my dad say this before but I guess I have selective hearing or something. I'll looking into this.

Corona15 - I was in Charlotte a few years back for a chess tournament i was in and I loved the city. So far in my short life, it is the best big city I have been in. I just personally love the city.

Gulfbreeze - I'll look at the Tampa Bay area and clearwater beach and run it by my friends. I may have to hit you up regarding your connections lol.

regarding Punta Gorda - I haven't heard anything about there except my grandparents have stayed there a number of times and loved it so I figured I'd see what people thought.

Thanks for all the advice and help people! I really appreciate it.

I went to Clearwater Beach with my parents last year, first family vaca in like 10 years.... The Beach is great but the bay is still cold that time of year, and when the sun sets, they roll up the sidewalks, I think I was the only person walking the streets drunk between midnight and 6am.

If you go, daytrip to the beach then head back towards Tampa for nightlife, if you can get in! NOt sure on how many 18 and up bars there are in Ybor City.

Tampa is cool, but I am not sure about the under 21 life, never lived here for that. About ybor city, they have really cracked down on the underage drinking lately, the police are everywhere. Clearwater beach is cool, a good place to check out the ladies, but the water is frickin cold this time of year.

If you all make it to Tampa, give me a shout out....I will buy you your first beer on Spring Break!
