Best Tequila? and don't say Cuervo!
The Tequila boom has hit California, driving down the price on some of Mexico's best tequila's. Please don't mention anything in the Cuervo family, as even wine spectator's article on tequila fell just short of calling it crap. Yes even the La familia reserva.
A few fav's in order
1. Chinaco Anejo
2. Milagro Anejo Barrell reserve(agave plant hand blown in the bottle)
3. Tonala reserva suprema - (Blue label/shot glasses in the bottle)
4. El Tesoro - Paradiso
5. Don Julio 1942
6. Casa Nobles - Black Bottle Reserve
7. Tonala Anejo - Square bottle
8. Pordifino anejo- no longer in production they broke the sacred rules
9. El Corazon Anejo
10. El Tesoro Anejo
Honorable mention
Milagro anejo
Espalon anejo
and best margarita tequila - Lapis Platinum Blanco- Pyramid bottle- just add grapefruit juice and simple syrup, shake over ice. Best damn Margarita you will ever have

Yeah but in this case I have to agree, my throat has experienced the discomfort of each of the Cuervo family tequila's passing down my esophagus. Wine Spectator got it right.PHBeerman wrote:Trust me there will be more.FFishstick wrote:Always one wise guy in the crowdPHBeerman wrote:Cuervo
I actually posted that before I even read your post. My advice, don't listen to everything that Wine Spectator has to say. Sometimes they go a bit over the top with their pretentiousness.

Suppose I never cared for tequila much. And never really liked margaritas, but sometimes I drink them if I'm in the mood. I always think it's kind of bitter, bad aftertase. If I were to try a top quality tequila and not use a margarita mix, but go with juice, might I like it much better. I think I want to give this a try. If I"m going to the liquor store what would a good starting place for a good quality tequila. I want something that I can buy something small since I might not like it and I don't want to waste a ton of money. Give me a tip or two.

Yikes, most top quality tequilas do not make a bottle smaller than 750ml. However, Milagro Anejo is availeable in the airplane size bottle for about 4 bucks. Other suggestion for a newbie tequila drinker would be the patron silver (a bit on the sweet side). Most of those on my list should be handled like fine scotch, pour it in a snifter and sip. The ones on my list run you about 40 - 120 bucks a bottle. This price is actually low, and most of them could not be touched for less than 60 bucks just a year or two back.OceanCityGirl wrote:Suppose I never cared for tequila much. BEST TEQUILA
I have to agree with STG. I haven't had many of the other top shelf ones listed here. Drank it like someone said, like sipping scotch. Quit buying it because I liked it tooooo muuucccchhhSidew13 wrote:Margaritaville

I've drank alot of tequila. I just never liked it so much. Generally have it at parties or local mexican restaurants where we are having pitchers or margaritas. But if it does come in an airline bottle I'd buy two bottles, and just sip it. If I liked it I would then buy a higher end tequila for special treats. I'd much rather have something really good on nice occasions then something cheap all the time. (though there's times for the cheaper stuff). See the beer thread. I almost never drink cheap beer, although there are some mid priced ones I'll drink. But I don't drink alot of beer so I can afford to splurge.Other suggestion for a newbie tequila drinker would be the patron silver
