Goshdarn meter-maids!

I just went in town (Boston) to get some lunch with my buddy and when I came out of the restaurant 30 minutes later my car had been towed. Now I am a pretty cautious driver/parker so when I parked I looked for any noparking signs (there were none) and saw that the entire street (except the spot I was taking) was filled with cars parked.
I went to the Police Dept. and they said if there is no meter then the rule is it's a no parking zone. I am not sure if I am just ignorant but is it true that no parking meter means you can't park there. I will remind you that there was no sign within 2 blocks indicating a no parking zone. And also, there were dozens of cars parked in front and behind me who were there before I parked and where sill there when I was towed (and none of these cars even had tickets.
So I took pictures of the block to show all the other cars on the same block and also to show the lack of signs. The person at the towing dept told me since I have pics it is definitly worth challenging. She also said since I have never had any type of ticket (moving or parking) that I will have the benefit of the doubt. But does anyone in Boston know of a rule that says you can't park anywhere without a meter (even when there are no signs). And also have any of you tried to refute a ticket here in Boston and had any luck?
