Great Album...Hot Water
Well, I went through an album checklist and we have all the cds except the first two and some other odd ones. But we have a collector's edition with songs from the first two albums. Anyway, I selected some of the cds that I don't listen to frequently, and Hot Water came up. The thread about James Taylor got me interested in this cd mainly. This is another great piece of work by Mr. Buffett. I had never listened to it before like I would Boats. Prince of Tides is great obviously. But That's What Livin' Is to Me and Great Heart deserve a lot of praise too. Anyone else really like this album?
Can't lay on the beach and drink rum all day...unless you start in the morning!
In addition to the songs you've mentioned I also like "Smart Woman (In A Real Short Skirt)", "Great Heart" and even "Homemade Music" but what keeps this album from being one of my all time favorites are what I consider some of Buffett's all time low points such as "Baby's Gone Shoppin'", "Bring Back The Magic" and "Pre-You".

I notice Pre-you comes up on a lot of "don't like" posts. What is it that people don't like about it. I think the concept of running into old flames with one's current significant other and the discomfort it sometimes brings is very relevant and rings true to me personally.Jahfin wrote:In addition to the songs you've mentioned I also like "Smart Woman (In A Real Short Skirt)", "Great Heart" and even "Homemade Music" but what keeps this album from being one of my all time favorites are what I consider some of Buffett's all time low points such as "Baby's Gone Shoppin'", "Bring Back The Magic" and "Pre-You".
It's really not the subject matter of the tune I'm not so fond of, it's the song itself. Along the line of Buffett's ballads I've also never been particularly fond of "Survive".ccmatt wrote:I notice Pre-you comes up on a lot of "don't like" posts. "Pre-You" is a song I REALLY like....for the same reasons you do...I live in a pretty small town...always bound to run in to the past at the grocery store.......it's a great phrase that has found it's way into conversations more than once.ccmatt wrote:I notice Pre-you comes up on a lot of "don't like" posts. I LOVE Pre-You. . . one of my all time favorites and deffinately not one of Buffett's lows. Its very relatable i think for anyone who has had a relationship and then runs into her/him later in their life.ccmatt wrote:I notice Pre-you comes up on a lot of "don't like" posts. i don't know, different strokes for different folks, but this has always been one of my favorites. . . .Jahfin wrote:In addition to the songs you've mentioned I also like "Smart Woman (In A Real Short Skirt)", "Great Heart" and even "Homemade Music" but what keeps this album from being one of my all time favorites are what I consider some of Buffett's all time low points such as "Baby's Gone Shoppin'", "Bring Back The Magic" and "Pre-You".
"Baby's Gone Shoppin'" - whats wrong with a fun song every now and then? Not every song has to change the world or be deep, and this is a good example of one. Very fun.
"Bring Back The Magic" - 'bring back the magic, don't make life so tragic.' What a great lyric!
"Pre-you" - relatable for everyone, and nice music too. very relaxing
just my 2cents though. My favorites from this album are: "Great Heart", "L'air Louisiane", "King of Somewhere Hot", "Prince of Tides", "Pre You", and "Thats what livin' . ."

"Hot Water" is an album that I didn't like much when it was released, but it does sound better with age. My personal favorite has always been "That's What Living is to Me," which Buffett once played solo acoustically on Whoopi Goldberg's long ago talk show in the early '90s.
I also thought "Pre-You" was OK -- lyrics are better than the melody.

I dislike 'Pre-You', although the man I credit with presenting me to JB loved it. However, I really, really like 'That's What Living is To Me', and "L'Air de Louisiane' is just pretty. Anyway. Mostly just wanted to see if I could still post on here and if my passwords, etc, still working. Guess so!

...I come down to talk to me...when the coast is clear...
Wasn't that version of That's What Living Is To Me JUST about the best thing you have ever seen.Parrotthed wrote:"Hot Water" is an album that I didn't like much when it was released, but it does sound better with age. If I could have one song played personally for me, it would be that one. It is a great story and has a good moral.
(Another song I would love played just for me is "Frenchman for the Night." I think it is time for Jimmy to dust that one off even if it hasn't been on the SHELF that long.)
Ain't life grand!

I've worked for about 2 years so I can sing along with L'Air de Louisiane.
King of Somewhere Hot makes me feel good all over.
Prince of Tides is forever connected to Pat Conroy's book.
Pre-You is also a fave.
That's What Livin' is also at the top.
Gentilly ... 42 years is a long time to wait .... a Northeast Texas woman can hope.
My love is an anchor tied to you, tied with a silver chain.

Hot Water is a great album - no stupid songs on it, great ballads, the grooves are solid, and if anyone notices in the liner notes - the Coral Reefer Band was in serious transition. Steve Cropper? Donald Dunn? Grover Washington Jr? Steve Winwood? Not common names with Buffett.
What no one has said and I am now is that the Neville Brothers sing backing vox on several tunes and it's just awesome. Combine these tunes with the other Hot Water sessions tracks and the earlier tunes - which I believe are post-Somewhere Over China - from the box set and you've almost got an album's worth of JB and the Neville Brothers.
The biggest thing to notice is listen to Hot Water - which I've read took a long time to complete, there are 10 recording studios listed - and then listen to the next year's album, Off To See The Lizard. He went from an organic album - which really started with Floridays - the album I've always said was his return to sound since Riddles and Mango were just sonically horrible (cheesy) - to a push button sounding album. The guitars are buried in Lizard. Hot Water is perhaps his greatest underappreciated album. It certainly has the most diversity on it as far as song styles go. Imagine if Lizard had half of the sound of Hot Water. It would have been a killer album.
