I dont see why everyone thinks buffett's music is so islandy . . . .not even half of his songs deal with the islands, probably not even 1/3 of them. They are more "key west" than "island".

Re: kenny chesney is not island music (not a flame)
island music is not taking any genre of music and writing lyrics about beaches, sand, pina colodas, bikinis, etc. island music is what you would expect to hear when you are in the islands (reggae, salsa, cuban, creole). no, not every buffett song tells stories of "laying out in the sun," but it is obvious that there are many island influences in his music (african, creole, spanish, etc.). jimmy didnt sit down and say to himself, "okay, i need to write 12 songs about the islands." thats why not every buffett song is "beachy."SEofDisorder wrote:why isn't kenny island music? . . . .as far as i see it, he is.12 lb. nestle crunch wrote:*this is not a flame*

country music (i.e. kenny chesney) is AMERICAN music, vastly different than the spanish, french, dutch, and african-influenced music of the caribbean.
if Master P wrote a rap song about st. barts, would it be considered island music? i think not. same situation.

But didn't Jimmy start out in country music and then move to so-called island music. So why can't Kenny move toward island music? IMHO there is only two types of music...good and bad. Just my two cents.

Re: kenny chesney is not island music (not a flame)
In some ways you're right. Writing a song about the beach doesn't nesecarily make it island music. . . .but where i think you are wrong is that Kenny's new album really captures the feeling of the islands more so than any other beach-crap country people like blake shelton are putting out and even more so than anything Jimmy has put out in the past 15 years. Have you listened to the album yet??? Listen to the title track "be as you are" and tell me that that doesn't take you right to St. John. I see almost no country influences on this album at all, it would be a far stretch to call it country. if anything its got a lot of buffett influences and at the same time has a lot of kenny's own style. All i know is that when I listen to it, it reminds me a lot more of the islands than anything Jimmy has put out since probably 1981. If you listen to the album its not just islandy lyrics to the music of a country tune. . . .its lyrics about lost-love, self-discovery, friends, and maybe some beach & alcohol mixed in there to the tune of a unique style of music that is anything but "country"12 lb. nestle crunch wrote:island music is not taking any genre of music and writing lyrics about beaches, sand, pina colodas, bikinis, etc. island music is what you would expect to hear when you are in the islands (reggae, salsa, cuban, creole). no, not every buffett song tells stories of "laying out in the sun," but it is obvious that there are many island influences in his music (african, creole, spanish, etc.). jimmy didnt sit down and say to himself, "okay, i need to write 12 songs about the islands." thats why not every buffett song is "beachy."SEofDisorder wrote:why isn't kenny island music? . . . .as far as i see it, he is.12 lb. nestle crunch wrote:*this is not a flame*

my opinion is that most of these kenny-haters are just intimidated by him and afraid of him and dont want him to "de-throne" jimmy. . . they also may be jealous because of kenny's looks. . .these are probably the same people that have very small penises.UAHparrothead wrote:But didn't Jimmy start out in country music and then move to so-called island music. I think he is moving toward island music. If you listen to early Kenny and recent Kenny, there's a definite difference. I'm not saying he's necessarily island music at this point, but I think he's moving closer that way.UAHparrothead wrote:But didn't Jimmy start out in country music and then move to so-called island music. in general .. the only use for 'classifying' people is for arguements sake .... i always thought of Buffet music to be just that ... BUFFET music .. its not Island .. not country ... its in a leaque of its own ...
If KC wants to have an island sound .. so be it ...
That is all.

not talking about you in particular 12 lb.....there just seems to be people that like to stir things up in this forum...I just don't understand if someone hates his music why come into a forum started for people who obviously ENJOY his music. Yes, i know its a buffett board but phjim deemed it important enough to start its on forum...I mean how would we all feel if someone who HATED Buffett came in to BN and started bashing him....again...not directed toward you 12 lb....12 lb. nestle crunch wrote:seriously, i wasnt trying to bash the guy. i said many times in my original post that this was NOT A FLAME. i DONT hate the guy. i was just stating what i believed to be a fact to clear some things up (fact based on what ive learned getting my degree in music)sunseeker wrote:just ignore thme SE...they are just trying to start something...

thanks for the clarification. i just want to say that i wasnt bashing KC. it just bothered me that ppl kept calling his stuff "island music." i think "island-country music" would be more appropriatesunseeker wrote:not talking about you in particular 12 lb.....there just seems to be people that like to stir things up in this forum...I just don't understand if someone hates his music why come into a forum started for people who obviously ENJOY his music. ok, i have been full on board wih the 'kenny is jimmy jr, or at least a wanna be' but i boght 'when the sun goes down' today adn i enjoy it. although the song where he sings about heading down a1a to key west sounds a little familar, i do like his music. my wife disagreed saying 'jimmy doesnt have a copyright on key west' thats kind of like saying bob marley doesnt have a copyright on jamica or sinatra doesnt have a copyright on salon songs...maybe not but they are the ones who put it on the map and are most coorelated to it....last time in key west i dont recall many people at EVERY corner covering kenny and writing songs about his influence on key west...crud i need to go to be i am drunk, especially if i have just written i am enjoying kennys music

Something less ordinary...
I say take Chesney's new DVD with his music videos, WHEN THE SUN GOES DOWN, and then take a look at Buffett's TALES FROM MARGARITAVISION . See which music looks and feels manufactured. I have watched both numerous times, so you try it.
I am not biased against Chesney, its just that his music does not appeal to me like Buffett's music does.
