St Thomas / St Croix ..

Post by HawaiianGator »

If for some chance I sold everything here and tried to relocate there ... would it be difficult or expensive to live there .. you know ... find work and stuff like that ..

[ do I get an award for a wildly openended question ?? ]

Do NOT relocate to St. Thomas!!!
High crime, not at all "laid back" like other tropical destinations.
St. Thomas encourages HEAVY cruise ship visits, which puts the locals into a feeding frenzy during the daylight hours. Local hotels tell you NOT to get into an unknown cab or walk around town after dark.
Not my idea of paradise!!!!
We'll party just like Bubba does,

I agree. My wife and I were recently there on a cruise. It's the only caribbean island we've been to recently that had serious traffic problems downtown. After a while, we thought about hanging signs on us that said "No we don't want a cab". If you've been there, you know what I mean. Great place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there.

Absolutely beautiful island paradise.... TO VISIT

Unless you're stinking rich and can live up high up on the hill,
you'll end up sitting next to the cruiseship docks selling ??? :o

Adear friend decided to get the hell out of Dodge after a bad break up and took as job a Food and Beverage director of one of the resorts. She
ended up quiting after she started to volunteer as a DJ for their local
radio station WIVI and got a full time position and then promoted to Progam Director. 4 Hurricanes, 2 homes, 3 cars and 4 Years later she
came to her senses and moved back to the state. She was in her mid
20's and doesn't regret it one bit.

Oh yeah, she's livin alright! Like I said, she loves it.

She didn't work at first (didn't have to) but then got a job in a real estate office..doing office work. BIG market for real estate there believe it or not.

As far as housing...since hubby is a DEA agent, they set them up when they first got there, paid to have all their things shipped over, even their car! After a few months, they found a gorgeous 3 bedroom condo and bought it! I know it was less than a 3 bedroom condo would have cost them in the States. Wish I knew how much they paid, but she didn't share that info.

They also bought a boat and take it out every weekend to Buck Island. My son had a Flat Stanley project in 3rd grade and we sent Flat to St. Croix and he certainly seemed to enjoy his time on the boat and on Buck Island...we have the pics to prove it! We did not turn the pics into school of Flat smokin and drinkin however.

They just sold the condo a few months ago and I know they made a profit because that she did share...not the amount it sold for, just the fact that they made money on the deal. They are now renting again because every 4 years, he gets transferred. Oh, and did ya know that they consider St. Croix a "hardship" destination...meaning that it's so undesirable that when your time is up there, you get to pick and choose where you want to be transferred next? I should have such hardship! They no longer wish to come back to "reality" and want to stay "islandminded".
He put in for a transfer to St. Thomas (after saying he hated it there!), also Puerto Rico and St. Lucia I think. He's still waiting for a spot to open and when it does, they'll go.

Hope that helped a bit. I think if this is really something you want to do, you should go for it! But I'd take a "go see" trip over there to get the lay of the land and perhaps even talk to a real estate agent. Not sure about jobs because don't know what it is you do...but I'm sure you could find work as long as you had some money to back you up for a bit if it takes a while.

If you need any more info, let me know. I can always call sis-in-law up and ask her whatever. :D

Thanks so much for the info. I am definately a "long planner" so anything I do takes forever to plan .. haaha...

Sometimes its just nice to have a purpose and a destination .. if it takes years to get there .. so be it .. but at least I am "headed" somewhere.

Well, thanks again ... that was great info. 8)

My grandparents just sold their place on St. Croix. It was a two bedroom condo richt on the beach. Selling price $35,000. Dirt cheap because no one wants to live there.

I lived on St. John for two years. St. John is great, but it's a whole different way of life and it was definately a life changing experience and has shaped who I am today. If you have the $$, do it.
