On January 15, 1919 - a tank owned by the United States Alcohol Company, containing 2 1/2 million gallons of molasses exploded in Boston. 21 people were killed and 150 were injured. No joke, people's feet stuck to the streets for months...and they say that on a hot day you can still smell molasses in some parts of the North End.

The smell in Boston has nothing to do with molasses.
