Any parrothead car people?? I've got a question
Hey, thanks for any help you can give. I've got a 1980 Jeep CJ-7 that wont start. Through many processes of trail and error, I've changed the battery, installed a new starter, installed a new solenoid, and changed the ignition module...but still no cranking. Its not doing anything at all...just sitting there like a huge paperweight. The gauges (voltage meter, lights) all work, so I know there is a circut going through. I also tested the lines between the battery and the solenoid, and the solenoid and the starter...all work. Still not turning over. Can anyone offer any suggestions before I take a sledgehammer to the damn thing? lol

If Frank is talking about what I think Frank is talking about it's just a tad bit shocking.

Seriously, try it. It's easy. Just bridge the gap between the 2 posts on the selenoid with a screwdriver. You'll know immediately if it will turn over or not. This will go a long way towards helping diagnose the problem.CaribbnSoul wrote:yeah...i dont think i have the cohones to try that one, lol. I had a truck with a bad ignition switch years ago that I had to start that way for like 3 months.

When my jeep was doing this we originally thought it was a spark problem but it turned out to be a fuel problem. The fuel pump to be precise. The pump was running, just very week. See if starter fluid will get it started. If so that might be your problem.
Here is a very good site to get info on your jeep. They are very helpful. I sold my wrangler but just bought another cherokee for another keet so I'm sure I'll be back here before you know it. Also you can do a search for your problem and you might find a posting that describes it to a t. I rarely had problems with the wrangler but I had alot of headache type probems with the cherokee. I don't think their motors are the same so any of the tips I give you might not help you. One thing that was a frequent cause of cherokees not starting was the crank position sensor.

i'm beginning to think its the switch, I'll just have to take apart the steering column to find out. But thats not too tough. I dont think its the voltage regulator because that wouldn't start affecting the jeep until it was running. There's always the chance that the new selenoid or starter that i bought were bad...i could check those out as well.

CS - seriously, do yourself a favor and try to start it by the seleniod. That will tell you in 2 seconds if the switch is bad.CaribbnSoul wrote:i'm beginning to think its the switch, I'll just have to take apart the steering column to find out.
