it's only March but this one is gonna be a toughy to beat....

The following mind-boggling attempt at a crime spree in Washington USA appeared to be the robber's first (and last), due to his lack of a previous record of violence, and his terminally stupid choices:

1. His target was H&J Leather & Firearms. A gun shop specializing in handguns.
2. The shop was full of customers - firearms customers.
3. To enter the shop, the robber had to step around a marked police patrol car parked at the front door.
4. A uniformed officer was standing at the counter, having coffee before work.

Upon seeing the officer, the would-be robber announced a hold-up, and fired a few wild shots from a .22 target pistol. The officer and a clerk promptly returned fire, the police officer with a 9mm Glock 17, the clerk with a .50 Desert Eagle, assisted by several customers who also drew their guns, several of whom also fired, The robber was pronounced dead  at the scene by Paramedics.

Crime scene investigators located 47 expended cartridge cases in the shop. The subsequent autopsy revealed 23 gunshot wounds. Ballistics identified rounds from 7 different weapons. No one else was hurt in the exchange of fire.

i am somewhat disappointed since

23 wounds / 47 casings x 100% = 48.94%

i would have expected a more accurate crowd, all things considered

Something tells me you're right. I found this almost-identical entry dated 1990.
On February 3, 1990, a Renton, Washington man tried to commit a robbery. This was probably his first attempt, as suggested by the fact that he had no previous record of violent crime, and by his terminally stupid choices as listed below:

1). The target was H&J Leather & Firearms, a gun shop;

2). The shop was full of customers, in a state where a substantial portion of the adult population is licensed to carry concealed handguns in public places;

3). To enter the shop, he had to step around a marked patrol car parked at the front door;

4). An officer in uniform was standing next to the counter, having coffee before reporting to duty. Upon seeing the officer, the would-be robber announced a holdup and fired a few wild shots. The officer and a clerk promptly returned fire, removing him from the gene pool. Several other customers also drew their guns, but didn't fire. No one else was hurt.
Looks like this one has been making the rounds for a while. The only difference is that the new one has everybody in the store opening up on the bad guy.

Still funny, though. :D

I stand corrected. Turns out the story was true (although not quite as dramatic as in the orignial message and it happened in 1990).

I knew I'd seen it before. I also remember one about a guy who tried to stick up a bar accross the street from a police station, turned out to be the after work place for many of the cops.

Another wannabe...
Pawnshop heist ends in bloody shootout
20 rounds fired; one robber killed, another wounded

An estimated 20 rounds were fired inside a southeast Houston pawnshop Wednesday during a shootout among armed robbers, an off-duty Brookside Village police officer and the store manager, investigators said.

When it ended, one of the robbers was dead, and another who was thought to be wounded fled with his accomplices, police said. Neither the officer nor store manager was seriously hurt, nor were the bystanders crouched on the ground, despite the shell casings, broken glass and blood littering the inside of the Magnolia Pawn Shop
