Advice, RE: 15yr old girlfriend
ok, this is only my second post on any bulletin board ever, so please bear with me! but this is something i can ask only of real Buffett fans.
so i'm at the friendly neighborhood record store the other day, and find a copy of Havana Daydreamin'. on a whim, i play it to see if it's "The One" with 15-yr old girlfriend and the alternate version of 2nd-wind. Lo and Behold! this has made my month - possibly my year (though, admittedly, it's been a pretty slow year so far). this is like finding one of those stamps the post office accidentally printed upside-down come in on your insurance bill! the record store clerk looked at me funny because i couldn't stop grinning. i pretty near skipped out of there.
now, i grew up with a copy just like this and it's a family heirloom. i always knew there was no way i'd sell it (i even sing along with the skips and scratches - you know what i'm talking about). i plan to be 80 and drinking beer and singing along to it on the back of my sailboat. but this is a spare! a spare copy! so i have two questions:
1. Do I Sell It? I mean, it's a spare, so I'm not turning my back on my heritage or spitting on the grave of Marvin Gardens or anything. Would it even be right for pitiful little me to have two copies while so many have none? I'm definitely leaning towards selling it (ask yourself WWJBD and you know I'm right!).
2. I think ebay's the way to go, but there's no way I'm going to let this thing go to some heathen for $14.25. So what do I set the reserve at to make sure I'm not letting go of my baby too cheap, but still let all valid parrotheads have a shot at it?
Any advice is appreciated - especially from experienced ebay-ers and/or parrothead aficionados!
Thanks, all.

Well how much did YOU pay for it???? Awesome find......but what if I, or anyone else here for that matter, were that "heathen" that wanted to buy it?cobo-monk wrote:2. Why wouldn't you sell it for what you paid for it? Why even put it on ebay unless your point is to make $$ on it. Just curious.

Oh here we go go again with the "it's wrong to make money" argument. For a point of reference, see Bubba's business plan and let me know then what the answer should be.
Plunder away, if someone wants to pay!

Welcome to the board first of all! This would be the place to find a collector of JB memorabilia AND someone who still has a phonograph! But do any of us know how much your treasure is worth? Not me!
I will however listen to it with you when you're 80 and I'll even bring the drinks!! That's what I'm here for! - BCD

I'd quietly offer it to friends/board members that you know for cost... that's what we've always done with extra tickets.
There's nothing WRONG with making money, but there's also nothing wrong with just spreading the joy with your fellow parrotheads.

1. Whew! This posting stuff is hard work! Hopefully, I’m making more friends than enemies here.
2. Re the “heathen” comment, all I meant was that I hope whoever got it would appreciate it and what they had, and wouldn’t just be re-selling it or letting it collect dust on their shelf.
3. Of course I’m trying to make money on it! I gotta do something to afford the sailboat! (Thanks for the comment re “Bubba’s business plan”. I’m totally in agreement.)
4. Affecting my decision is the fact that I’ve been purposely unemployed for six months and the savings account is starting to run dry. Also, I got my car stereo stolen last night, so now I can’t even listen to tunes on the road.
5. The alternate version of Second Wind has saxophones in the background where the guitars should be, or is it the other way around? Anyway, it’s the waa-waa-waa after the second “gotta do another show”, etc. I prefer the sax version. That and 15y.o.g. take the place of “Woman Goin’ Crazy…” and “Defying Gravity”.
6. I’m definitely keeping the one with the scratches. After being raised with it, I can barely sing along with a pristine version. The vinyl one I just bought looks and plays just fine.
7. Hey, nycparrothead – I’ll send you a tape of it for free. Send me a private message.
8. BCD, you get started on the drinks, and I’ll get started on the sailboat.
9. Does anybody know the story behind this album? I was in college hanging with another parrothead before I found out that this wasn’t the way all HD’s were. Talk about a mindblower. How do a song about the temptations of statutory rape and a rejected cut of an existing song get pressed on to vinyl and shipped? I’d love to know some background.
10. Wow, my posts are way longer than everybody else’s. I’m gonna cut back on the caffeine.
Thanks again, everybody.

I'm intrigued by this as I didn't know it exists. Have to pull my copy of Havana out of the closet and see what I got. I'm sure you can browse past auctions for this and get an estimate of what people are willing to pay. PM what price you're thinking its worth. I've been collecting Buffett records for a couple of years now but I've gotten all of them for a $1 or 2 from Goodwills and Thrift Stores. I realize to complete it though, I'll have to pay a little more for Down To Earth, High Cumberland Jubilee, and "The movie I own but can't think of the name of that JB did the soundtrack to".

Here are some notes I got from cobo:
Two rare versions of this album are rumored to exist. One contains the songs "Please Take Your Drunken 15 Year Old Girlfriend Home," and "Train to Dixieland," and the other version contains the song "We've Been Taken to the Cleaners (and I Already Had my Shirts Done)." Another variation exists: ABCD-914a. It does not contain "Woman going Crazy on Caroline Street" instead it has " Kick It In, Second Wind" first song, side a. The last song on side a is "Please Take Your Drunken 15 Year Old Girlfriend Home," not "Defying Gravity." "Train To Dixieland" nor "We've Been Taken to the Cleaners."
So people have found the one with "girlfriend"/"dixieland" and "alternate second wind"/"girlfriend", but as of now, no "cleaners". Does the song even exist?
I have to restate the question on how copies of an un-finalized track program get pressed. (?)
I have in my possession a good Techniques(sp?) turntable that’s only a year old. You can get really good sound out of vinyl from it too.
Anyway, if Havana Daydreamin’ was ever to be given the re-master/re-release treatment, we know there’s no shortage of possible bonus tracks to choose from. It would be the perfect opportunity to get these rare tracks out there on the digital format.
