Too much LTC in last nights show?
Last night Jimmy played five songs from LTC, every other show of this tour he has played three and mixed in songs like "presents to send you" I dont know about you but I would much rather have fewer LTC songs and more old ones.
Both shows at Greatwoods in June
Seattle and Vegas in October

Last night's setlist was the worst of the tour. Hope he shakes that before Hawaii. "Piece Of Work" and "Coast of Carolina" is all the LTC we need.phansheridan wrote:Last night Jimmy played five songs from LTC, every other show of this tour he has played three and mixed in songs like "presents to send you" I dont know about you but I would much rather have fewer LTC songs and more old ones.
When someone is touring in support of a new album (although this is the Salty Piece of Land Tour, License To Chill is still his newest studio offering) I'd fully expect it to be the focus of the show. As much as I love the old stuff, I'd be disappointed if I only heard 3 cuts from the new record but that's why some folks level accusations of "nostalgia act" at performers such as Buffett.

Last night's set list was a major let down for me. I was enjoying the mix of other songs in the list. He's been doing this long enough that we could get a much broader mix every show. I am glad WGCOCS is in, but I miss hearing other songs like PTM, GFJF, Pascagoula Run, Gumbo, the list goes on and on. He promised Dessdamona would be back in this year. I hope he lives up to that. And just curious, but He went to Paris is a SYKBH why don't we ever hear it?

I like LTC well enough, but that's last year's tour. I want it mixed up more this year, just like Tiki Time mixed things up after FSOTW. Even with SBH, this definitely isn't my favorite set list.

I don't think Jimmy tours to support a new album. It sells itself based on name recognition. Most of the casual fans don't hear the new albums and non-country fans could live without most of LTC.Jahfin wrote:When someone is touring in support of a new album (although this is the Salty Piece of Land Tour, License To Chill is still his newest studio offering) I'd fully expect it to be the focus of the show. The problem I have with his setlist is how static it is from night to night. Every show should be different from the night before. Keep the standards and rotate a mix of about 30 songs into 8 or so slots nightly. Most bands take 50+ songs on tour to keep it fresh.

Sounds good to me! I still wanna hear Migration! (he didn't even do Presents To Send You, or Life Is Just A Tire Swing last nightphansheridan wrote:Last night Jimmy played five songs from LTC, every other show of this tour he has played three and mixed in songs like "presents to send you" I dont know about you but I would much rather have fewer LTC songs and more old ones.

I would love that too, but do you know how many songs the band would have to know at any given time?cowboyjunkie wrote:I don't think Jimmy tours to support a new album. I'm not sure that is practical.
I'd prefer to see more variety in the setlists myself but bands that change things up to that extent seem to be the exception not the rule. Aside from all the hard work required to rehearse that many tunes, I think the highly choreographed nature of Buffett's show also plays a major factor. A few years back Elvis Costello did a Wheel of Fortune thing where he'd spin a big wheel that listed all of his songs and he played whatever one the dial landed on. Given the breath of his back catalog it's nearly unimaginable the amount work that most have been involved in learning all those songs.

At their level, they could take 50 songs on the road without blinking twice. Sure, the choreographed aspect of the show would have to be reduced but most fans are there to hear the music.springparrot wrote:I would love that too, but do you know how many songs the band would have to know at any given time?cowboyjunkie wrote:I don't think Jimmy tours to support a new album. I like what he said in Charlotte.Jahfin wrote:When someone is touring in support of a new album (although this is the Salty Piece of Land Tour, License To Chill is still his newest studio offering) I'd fully expect it to be the focus of the show.
Of course he didn't even play "salty Piece of Land, but I did enjoy the older songs.JB wrote:Why we would name the tour after a book? Well, we don't have any new albums to promote, so why the hell not?
It's your world, I'm just living in it!
I think if Buffett was going to mix things up in the manner of the Grateful Dead and other bands that radically change their set lists from night to night he would have done it a long time ago. I'd love to see him take that approach myself but at this stage of the game I just don't see it happening.

I wouldn't call his show highly choreographed, just because there are Reeferettes. With few exceptions, it doesn't seem so elaborate that they couldn't vary the songs.Jahfin wrote:I think the highly choreographed nature of Buffett's show also plays a major factor.
But I really enjoyed the variety of the shows earlier this year, which seem a bit more inspired than Tuesday. Look forward to hearing what tonight offers.

I would say Buffett's show is heavily produced which relies on things remaining in a certan order from night to night which informs how much he can alter the setlist. The light show and other things also factor into this. I'd say just be thankful he shakes things up at all, some acts play the exact same setlist every night.

The setlist will remain fresh if you don't listen to every show on RM or go to 5 shows a year. Many people only get to see him live once a year or in some areas every 5 years. To them, it's fresh. So, if one night he plays song A then the next night song B, the folks who hear song B will get mad because they didn't hear song A. Changing songs or "shaking up the list" will only appeal to those who listen and see him every leg.

Unchoreographed Buffett
Does anyone remember the tour, in the mid-80's, when Jimmy rolled on stage a "lotto" like machine (lots of balls being mixed up in the air)? Each ball had a name of a song on it - so whatever ball came up, he played the song that was listed on it.
Now that was pretty cool....
