Ben Harper

Post by tdparrothead »

Just bought some Ben Harper cds today. Great stuff. Any fans out there? Has a Jack Johnson sound to him, although I know the 2 of them are friends, so that makes sense. I suggest everyone check his stuff out, very mellow music and good lyrics.

Yep also a Ben Harper fan. Didn't know there was a connection between the two but knew they had a similar sound.

Ben Harper plays slide guitar on Flake on Jack Johnson's first album. They both appear together on a guitar magazine this month.

Yes. I saw Ben, Jack and G Love a couple years ago perform together which was cool. Then about a year ago Jack took the backseat and had Ben headline and Jack open for him at the Santa Barbara Bowl. Great show. I dig Ben's cover of The Verve's "Drugs Don't Work".

I really like his earlier stuff although his newer stuff is good too. He just doesn't seem to use the Weissenborn as much anymore.

Ben is great

I've been a huge ben harper fan for a while now, he really knows how to use his lyrics and make a little go a long way with the guitar (although he knows how to jam out too). I would have loved to see he and jack and g. love all at the same time....who's stuff did they sing the most of?

G. love actually gave jack his start when g. love recorded jack johnson's "rodeo clowns" after doing a little longboarding together.....the ocean can perpetuate amazing things!

I'm a ParrotHead first, but I'm almost as big of a Harper fan. Not a lot of people are fans of both Jimmy and Ben, but it's nice that there are a few here who are.

The very best concert I have ever attended was a DJ Logic/Jack Johnson/Ben Harper show here in Phoenix in 2003. Ben's (and the Innocent Criminals) set was the closest thing to a religious experience I had encountered at the time (and, no, I wasn't on anything  ) and still ranks as the best live set I have ever seen. Simply amazing stuff.

Pointless post, but I love Ben and the ICs and just had to share.

My nephew turned me on to Jack Johnson and his next effort is Ben Harper. Of what I've heard, I like his Steal Your Kisses. I've also heard a little of his CD with the Blind Boys of Alabama.

Just wondering how Ben is "similar" to Buffett. I know the other artists mentioned in the description to this forum have some sort of tie to Buffett (i.e., he's covered one of their songs, Buffett's worked with them in some capacity, etc.) but I'm not sure what Ben Harper's connection to Buffett is. By the way, this isn't meant to be argumentative. I asked in another thread for someone (phjim, a mod) to explain the purpose of this forum but so far there has been no explanation. It remains unclear if it's set up solely for artists related to Buffett (as it's name implies) or if it's for ALL other artists besides Buffett.

I've only heard a little bit of Ben Harper's music but I've liked what I've heard. If he's trying to be "retro" I think Lenny Kravitz started out on a similar path years ago and then quickly went down the dumper but Ben, however derivative, seems to be in it for the long haul.

Thanks and I greatly appreciate it but that still doesn't answer my question. If it was moved because Ben Harper is considered a "similar" artist, I'm wondering what's similar about him. As I previously mentioned, all of the other artists included in the description to this forum have some sort of tie to Buffett. To my knowledge, Ben doesn't. Again, I'm not trying to be argumentative, I'm just asking for some clarification as to whether or not this forum is reserved for Buffett related artists only as it's name implies or is it for ALL other artists besides Buffett. If it's for the latter, the description provided for this forum doesn't make that very clear, particularly the "Related Artists" part.

I believe the first few lines of Jim's description of the forum - although it's the "Related Artist Discussion" the first 7 words of his description of the purpose and intent are clear
Here you can discuss any other artist including

I was wondering the same thing.
I guess this forum is a musical free for all.
I'll post my review for the new cd from rapper Ludicris later and as for you, bring on those DBT threads

I guess he kinda has a mellow sound like some of Jimmy 's older stuff, but I'd say he's more similar to Jack Johnson than Jimmy Buffett, but since Jack Johnson has done a JB song and JB has done a Jack Johnson song and BH has appeared on a JJ album then they are all connected... sort of. That's my explanation lol.
