#@!**#@$!! POP-UPS!

Post by lorilovv »

A few days ago I visited an unfamiliar website and since then, I have crazy pop-ups all over the place. They're driving me nuts! Somebody pleeez help me. I'm somewhat technologically challenged but was able to figure out how to delete alot of advertisement cookies and a few others, but it really hasn't helped. A little help for Lorilovv?!

Go to Lavasoft.com and download their free version of AD AWARE. It kills a lot of spy and ad programs. Install it and run it, then use it to kill the bad programs. If that doesn't work I have another program, but one thing at a time.

GOOD LUCK!!!

Yup....ST gives good advice.

And I also go to add/remove programs under control panel and see things that are unfamiliar and have a recent date on them...and then give them the boot.

Yup, it's a good one. I was using AdAware and Spybot for a while, and it found some others on my computer I wasn't aware of!

The other program I use is called Spyware Blaster. It won't remove the spyware programs, but it prevents the program from sending or receiving. My dad had a pesky internet toolbar that I couldn't get rid of and Blaster knocked it down.

Find Spybot here: http://www.download.com/3000-8022-10122137.html

Spyware Blaster here: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

With all these programs, after you install them have the program check for the latest updates available.

I swear by the Google toolbar! It is great! It has a popup blocker. I also use SpyBot to clean up spyware. I used to only use it once a month or so, but its getting to the point where I'm having to use it at least once a week if not more.

Bob, you should try the other programs too. No one program gets them all. I think you would be amazed at the other crap on your system you aren't aware of that slow things down.

Mozilla Firefox browser is the only way to go!
(Except for those %#*%! websites that require Exploder. )
I think I've had maybe 10 pop-ups TOTAL
since I started using it months ago.
I also run AD AWARE occationally.

If you want an even better spyware cleaner, go to Sunbelt Software and download "Counter Spy". They have a free demo version; after that its $20 bucks year.

For comparision, I ran Lavasoft's AdAware and found 3 potential spyware programs. Then I ran Counter Spy and found over 160. Free programs are just like anything else, you get what you pay for.

I run Ad-Aware Pro ( was installed for free on last upgrade) Spybot, and also Window Washer ( Full version found it for FREE on FOSI. It is WAREZ site. BE VERY careful using ANY WAREZ!!! Always viral scan before install... I never heard of any trouble from FOSI or one other trusted site...but there are many WAREZ sites out there waitng for the unsuspecting and unknowing and unprotected and lead to po-up hell)
MAKE SURE your JAVA is turned off note...you made to use Java on a case by case bass sometimes. You can get JAVA bombed and slow your puter down to nothing. Make sure your Active X is turned off or to only accept what you will allow.)
Window Washer removes all cookies and history and more!!! Evidently it must remove some spyware SOMEHOW cause I ran before I ran ad-aware or spybot and they came out clean.....and I know there was spyware there.
As with any program check for updates AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK along with your antiviral... if you don't already check more often.

I agree there are many other proggies out there and not one gets all of them. Also a GOOD Firewall you can get Zone Alarm for FREE for home use and it is EXCELLENT and is most easy to use and to learn. XP has a firewall not sure how it rates with ZA though. I have no idea what system you are using.
Roll with the punches, play all of your hunches...come what may...
