He wrote Elvis Imitators, Banana Republics, Door Number Three, California Promises, Hotel Room, and Where's The Party all covered by Buffett on albums. Probably some I missed to.

A national treasure -even 20 years after his death.
Oh, and don't forget "City of New Orleans".

I didn't find out until 3 years ago or so (when reading the liner notes to Goodman's No Big Surprise compilation) that John Prine also had a hand in writing that song but turned down writing credits because, well, he apparently didn't think it was all that great. In lieu of the writing credit Goodman gave him an old Wurlitzer jukebox instead.

I can't believe Goodman (the BN poster, that is) hasn't chimed in on this one yet. :D

I ususally recommend the 2 disc set "No Surprise". It contains most of his well known material, and, one of the discs features live recordings, and it is only then that you really get a true sense of his talent, and his wonderful sense of humor. I have given several copies of it to friends to get them started. There also is a DVD available, and that is another way to get a sense of how much fun he was.

What I'd like is if they actually carried Steve Goodman cds in record store. They should... I'd buy 'em.

Boy, I see them all the time, but then again, I am in the Chicago area which may make a difference on this.

Niche artists such as Steve are rapidly disappearing from the record stores (depending on where you shop of course) but there's always the option of shopping online. I hate it too but sometimes it's the only way to find the music I'm looking for.

That's been about the only way I've been able to find Mac McAnally cds too.
