I agree he isn't a great rapper but he's not terrible. . . .less monotone than 50 IMO for sure. Yeah its deff. his production that makes him so good, and also i think its the fact that he can be both fun and serious at the same time, something that only few rappers can do.iuparrothead wrote:I love Kanye and The College Dropout, but you can't say he's a good rapper... he's a terrible rapper. Talk about monotone. What bails him out is he is a fantastic lyricist and even better producer. He's made the best beats outside the Neptunes of 2004 & 05.
new cd from 50 Cent

I didnt much care for rap when it emerged in the seventies... and my feelings havent changed. Oh I know its called hip hop now...but IMO music has melodies and chords and words I can understand. Maybe its the generation.. maybe it just me... but I wouldn't pay 50 cents for any of it.

Being from the old school of hip hop, I'd prolly say that LL Cool J is the greatest rapper of all time. The perfect voice, very clear, and usually when someone dissed him he would rip them a new one (see Canibus and Moe Dee).ParrotheadGator wrote:
but I'd go as far to say that 2pac was the best rapper of all time. He had some deep lyrics, entertaining lyrics...and he could go from serious to screwing around instantly...and it was almost always good.
Tupac's voice was not that great in my opinion and was more of a hit because of his "thug life" image. Although perhaps it was not an image since he got what was coming to him. Spread negativity and eventually it will come back to you.
When Biggie and Tupac died they all of a sudden became "the Greatest" which is a slap in the face of other rappers.
As far as groups I'd go with RUNDMC, none will ever do what they did.
Their "Raising Hell" album is the best rap album of all time in my opinion with no drivebys or shooting on it either.
I've been to prolly 15 rap concerts in my life and RUNDMC, who I've seen three times were always the best live performers, strangely enough Biggie was the worse.
The Beastie Boys "License to Ill" is also up there too as well as LL's "Radio". Funny how Rick Rubin produced LL, RUNDMC, and the Beasties best albums perhaps making him one of the greatest producer of all time with Dre being the best. I'm into the fun stuff primarily, although Dre's "The Chronic" is in my top ten as well as NWA's "Straight outta Compton" too.
I must admit though that I do not like the dirty lyrics as much as a did as a youngbuck, perhaps having kids and growing up will do that to you.
When you compare a lot of these new artists out today with the older ones who did not even need to cuss, the new generations just can't hold up. Not all but a majority.
Heck I can put on MTV or BET and it's like a comedy show seeing how bad most rappers are today.

It's always been called hip hop and rap although some say that hip hop is more the lifestyle/culture and rap is a part of it.ToplessRideFL wrote:I didnt much care for rap when it emerged in the seventies... and my feelings havent changed. Anything with a beat is music in my opinion. if Indian or African drums can be called music anything can although I'll admit that nowadaze, judging from what I hear and see, it seems that almost anybody can be a rapper.

yeah all you really need is connections and an image to be a rapper . . . talent isn't that important . . .oh yeah, and being black helps too (there goes my life-long aspirations of becoming hardcore gangsta rappersonofabeach wrote:It's always been called hip hop and rap although some say that hip hop is more the lifestyle/culture and rap is a part of it.ToplessRideFL wrote:I didnt much care for rap when it emerged in the seventies... and my feelings havent changed.
