Jimmy inducted into HOF...

Post by parrothead338 »

Ok so maybe Jimmy hasnt yet been inducted into Rock and Roll's HOF but this thread can help pretend he is being induceted.

I was going to do a speech on Buffett in a class of mine last month but decided to hold it off until next week instead. It is my final speech for a class here at school and it is a "special occasion" speech. So we have to pretend we are giving a speech at a special occasion.

I have decided to pretend I am introducing Jimmy Buffett on the night of his induction into the Hall of Fame. So I have to make this speech very good as this would be a very important night for Jimmy and all of us parrotheads. Yes this is not really happening but we can imagine what it would be like if we had the chance to introduce JImmy on a special night like this.

So I am seeing if you guys could help contribute some ideas as to what things you would include in a speech that introduces Jimmy into the Hall of Fame. I have to do things like summarize his career and why his music is so speacial.

Any meaningful quotes, stories, etc. would be helpful.

This is one heck of a task you've undertaken here, I will have to give it some thought.

Just going to a concert and seeing the fans will show you why his music is important. There are no fans like parrotheads. 8)

I would definately tell the story of his first trip to Key West with Jerry Jeff. Talk about his ability to connect with his fans, the whole idea of escapism and how Jimmy fits into it.

Great topic, but what a challenge!!!

I'll think on this some more, but you definately have to talk about how he didn't fit into everybody else's prescribed genres, so he went out and created his own. And also, discuss the fact that he's gotten more mileage out of his work than probably any other artist -- longevity in touring, merchandising, restaurants, internet radio, etc.

Good luck!!!

Jimmy in HOF

Two words- "Jimmy Dreams". Love the guy but ain't gonna happen. The man gets no respect where it will count to get in. Important thing is the respect he gets from his fans, not the judges.
I know Jimmy Buffett, Jimmy Buffett is a friend of mine. Son, you're no Jimmy Buffett!

The speech has to be 5 minutes so I have to condense it pretty good. The main part of the speech will be the idea of escapism and how his music and shows allows this sensation of escapism.

There is also a story I read in one of his books about how he was walking in Key West before his career took off and asked some guy on the street if he could play his guitar and the man obliged. After 2 minutes of playing the guitar the man grabbed his guitar back in disgust b/c he thought JImmy was the worst guitar player he'd heard and then Jimmy responded to the man with something like "I may not have alot of talent but I'll be rich because I know what people want." I forget the exact details of the story so Ill look 'em up but I just found it funny and it perfectly shows how Buffett's music empire began in Key West and sprialled up to what it is today.

Ok so I am putting together the speech tonight and one thing I was to include in the beginning of my speech is a fun little story of Jimmy's career. I was going to do the story of when the guy in Key West made jimmy stop playing his guitar because he though Jimmy sucked but that story just doesnt seem to fit.

Maybe a story he told at a concert, book etc. about his career. If anyone can think of a funny short story he has said that might be escaping my mind please contribute it. Just because I find it better to start a speech of with a funny story about JImmy to get a nice laugh early.

Any help would be aweomse!!
