Has Jimmy become what his earily songs denounced
I am not sure if it is the terrible weather we have been having here in the midwest or what. Maybe I need to fly to St Somewhere, but I was listening to a lot of JB last weekend as the snow was flying outside and had alot of down time. Cowboy in the jungle came on the old cd player and then Migration. I think I had too many beers because it seems to me that He(JB) is turning into the folks he lampoons in these older songs. "I do not want to live on that kind of island", didn't he just buy a zillion dollar condo on Manhatten(an island)? And also Long Island(I know lived there for years)? He is more of the businessmen that he is running away from on "the weather is here" then the guy running. The Who wrote I hope I die before I get old, well most of them didn't and have had to live selling their songs to CSI shows. I just hope we have more stories of JB showing up at far off places doing impromptu shows than the stories coming out of late...private million dollar shows and buying swanky condos. He can do what he wants, who the heck am I, but some loser watching it snow in April, but we have all fallen in love with the throw it all away, go buy an island vision and drink and dance story that he has sold for decades...now it turns out the island is in New York. Gosh I hope the sun comes out soon.

Gosh I hope so. Parts of OH got 12 inches of snow last weekend. So much for global warming. But don't you think when alot of the great songs of the 60's and 70's were written they were very anti-establishment and a way of life, those folks meant what they wrote. I know many of his songs are autobiographical and some are not just stories he heard here and there. Those older songs have a lot of heart to them. It seems now he is "almost" polar opposite of where he was, which is fine we all grow up and he has money now, but he is still selling that dream, even though he has sailed on. No doubt he wants to retire soon, he is not the same guy, he is corporate, heck he IS the corporation.

Let's face it - a lot has changed since 1974. It's funny about how people forget where they came from.....
MAKIN' MUSIC FOR MONEY
When I woke up this morning
I was tired as I could be
I think I was counting my money
When I should have been counting sheep
My agent he just called me
and told me what I should be
If I would make my music for money
Instead of making music for me
Chorus
I said I know that this may sound funny
But money don't mean nothin' to me
I won't make my music for money, no
I'm gonna make my music for me
He said that people only buy the love songs.
Rock and roll is not too long
He said son you got to be commercial
If you want to turn the people on.
And I said turning on the people
Now that's a beautiful place to be
But if I spend my time makin' memorable rhyme
Well who's gonna turn on me?
Chorus
Well now, I went up the country
And I'll tell you all about the scene
I found a place with much charm and much grace
That was untouched by the music machine
Well the people where havin' a good time
Makin' music all day long
And nobody cared if they ever got paid
One penny for playin' a song

Well...(said in my best Bubba voice) I've been on sabbatical.

I don't know about you, but it sounds like he has done what he sang about.

Sure I see your point about the music, but JB is more than the music. It is a way of life. He sold us on the islands and now his island is Manhatten(man I hate NYC) or Long Island(every time I have been there I have gotten lost). Great he grew up but(just my opinion) why couldn't he have "grown up" in Florida or Alabama? Some place close to the dream and not the anti dream. I need to go to ATA.com. I am gonna turn on some old school buffett right now and get some good old fashioned paper work done, yahoo.

For whatever it's worth, Buffett didn't write "Makin' Music For Money", it was written by Alex Harvey of Sensational Alex Harvey Band fame so it's kind of unrealistic to hold him to words he didn't pen in the first place. Even back in his 70s heyday Buffett was selling more myth than truth and that's always been part of his appeal, the mystery behind the man. That he chose to dole out parts of that mystery over the years in small parts is also testament to his prowess as a business man and entertainer. Even though I like his newer stuff it's the older music that will always reign supreme to my ears. Even though the business aspect of his career can sometimes be percieved as a double-edged sword, what with all the merch he has available, I admire him for having to foresight to realize that one day the hits might stop coming and starting up the first Margaritaville store. Gone forever are the tunes of the beach bum troubadour but modern day Buffett shows he still has an ear for a good tune as evidenced by the covers he's wisely chosen for License To Chill that can't help but lead fans to the works of lesser known artists such as Guy Clark, Will Kimbrough, John Hiatt and Bruce Cockburn.

It's spelled "Manhattan" and if you get lost on Long Island perhaps you shouldn't leave your driveway. There might be traffic but it's pretty tough to get lost on an island that's only 20 miles from north to south and has an east/west highway running through the middle of it...snowcow wrote:He sold us on the islands and now his island is Manhatten(man I hate NYC) or Long Island(every time I have been there I have gotten lost).
