An excellent early album! Great acoustic playing. Sounds especially good in the summer. Highlights include "Making Music for Money" (one of his best rock songs!), "Migration" (talks about his Caribben Soul!), "Nautical Wheelers", and the famous "A Pirate Looks at 40". Classic stuff. Highly recommended.

As this album contains the best song ever written - A Pirate Looks at 40 - imo it has to be considered one of Jimmy's best if not THE best. I realize that this song has almost gained SYKBH status, but it still can give me chill bumps almost every time I hear it. AWESOME is not adequate enough to describe it. Many feel his early stuff is the best, and while there are others that come close, on a deserted isle, I'd have to take this one...

A1A is Buffett at the top of his game. It has been a down hill ride ever since....good albums and good songs have come along the way, but nothing can compare to this album.

Doesn't surprise me that you didn't post by NAME!!
Don't get me wrong I love A1A!!! Duh! My name (which *I* post) comes from it, BUT to say it's all down hill from there, give me a break. Even the CoBO gives Jimmy 3 more years. My other favorites span the decades... Coconut Telegraph and One Particular Harbour from the 80's and Barometer Soup and Beach House on the Moon from the 90's. Jimmy has evolved and grown and so have I. I am sorry if you haven't.

CS (note to JR... that's CaribbeAn, OK )

If anyone had any doubt that Jimmy Buffett was here to stay, then the release of A1A tied those feelings to an anchor and tossed it overboard. A1A is power-packed from start to finish; every song stands alone as a classic. With that in mind many have asked, "why does Jimmy not play more of these excellent songs at his shows?" Well, Jimmy has heard the complaints and at Sag Harbor he played no less than 4 songs from this masterpiece.
"Makin' Music for Money" and "Dallas" will set you on fire with their rocking beats. "Door #3" is a great comical romp about one of the craziest game shows to ever be put on television..."Let's Make a Deal", where people dressed up in the wildest outfits and costumes they could find in the hopes they might get on stage and get a chance to make complete fools of themselves, (anyone see any similarities?) The album doesn't stop there, however. "Tin Cup Chalice", "Presents to Send You", "Stories We Could Tell", and "Trying to Reason with Hurricane Season" will sway you out over the Gulf on the wings of gulls. "Migration" grabs onto you where "Cuban Crime" dropped you. "Nautical Wheelers" will make you a sailor for a day--even in the dessert, and "A Pirate Looks at 40" will bring a tear to the eye of even the meanest man. "Pirate" is without a doubt one of my 5 favorite Buffett songs due to the fact that an ancestor of mine was a pirate in the Baltic and North Seas long before piracy was even "in style" and 90+ years before a man named Columbus supposedly discovered America.
Nicholas von Baden was beheaded on June 9th, 1402 for the crime of piracy (on many, many counts) and the executioner, keeping his word, stood the headless body of Nicholas in front of his men, who stood single file as their decapitated captain managed to walk past 3 of them, setting them free, before tripping over a log, thrown down by the executioner.
In the tradition of the song, that IS a true story.

score for A1A: 6 coronas (out of a possible 5)

I love Jimmy Buffett music and am huge Parrot head. I feel that A1A is one of his best albums. It is one of those rare albums that you can just put in and play from beginning to end. There are just so many good songs. I don't understand why no one has mentioned "The Stories We Could Tell." THIS SONG IS GREAT!! This is a for sure buy for any Parrot Head or anyone who loves good music.

Jimmy Buffett's is truly at his best on this album. This album does have some rough spots on it, but all in all, I think this truly shows his carefree spirit that was present on most of his earlier albums.

I'm a new surfer to this site. I went to A1A reviews first to see what other PHeads had to say about this album, because I also think this is Buffet's greatest work. Every song is a keeper. I would say that of my favorite individual Buffett songs, this album contains three of them. Of course "A Pirate Looks at 40", "Migration" really kicks, and "Stories to Tell" is vintage stuff. Wasn't real wild about "Tire Swing" at first listen, but it too contains some very clever writing. Not a bad song here.

This is my all time favorite Buffett album. And it took me a while to warm up to it oddly enough. I think Makin' Music and Door #3 are the good but the rest are pure GOLD. A compilation CD of my favorite unknown songs included 5 from this CD alone. CILCIA pulls in a close second but this really is Buffett's finest.
