Just discovered John Denver and John Prine
Now before I get started I always knew who these artists were. I always thought John Denver as "un-cool," but after listening to his lyrics all I can say is wow. The same can be said about John Prine other than the un-cool comment. Does anyone know if JB has ever played with either of these tow artists. Thanks guys, and sorry that I haven't posted in so long. Phinz Up everyone!
I'm back to livin' Floridays

although JB's and JD's music are very different from each other, they have at least one thing in common: they're both poets. take away the melodies, and what's left is poetry. that's probably the main reason why I love the music created by both of them.
Carry on as you know they would want you to do. ~~JB, dedication to Tim Russert

Prine and Somebody Else's Toroubles
Granted no official performance credits appear for Buffett, Prine or Dylan ( but see Robert Milkwood Thomas - on title song); it's inconceivable that JP & JB didn't join in on some tunes even if on an anonymous basis.Jahfin wrote:I can't stand John Denver but I'm a longtime John Prine. To my knowledge Buffett hasn't performed with either of them. Buffett and Prine appear on the cover of Steve Goodman's Somebody Else's Troubles but apparently don't perform on the record.
I know Jimmy Buffett, Jimmy Buffett is a friend of mine. Son, you're no Jimmy Buffett!

I forget where I read it now (perhaps on the Prine Shrine site) but apparently neither one of them play on the record at all.Goodman wrote:Granted no official performance credits appear for Buffett, Prine or Dylan ( but see Robert Milkwood Thomas - on title song); it's inconceivable that JP & JB didn't join in on some tunes even if on an anonymous basis.Jahfin wrote:I can't stand John Denver but I'm a longtime John Prine. I have always thought John Denver was both the best lyricist and songwriter that ever lived . . .for John Prine though, i must say that he's good but IMO he's no John Denver. I completely agree that both JD and JB are both poets at heart. And I also share JD's passion for nature 100%, so thats one of the main reasons i love his music so much. I would give anything to see him live, but unfortunatley that will never happen

any john denver fan should by his CD "Celebration of Life: The Last Recordings" of the very cheap "Best of John Denver" (usually shelved in the discount CDs) because they were his last recordings and were new interpretations of his hits and extremely moving, considering that he re recorded them just a few months before he died. All of the new versions are better than the old ones.

I would also suggest the Wildlife Concert either on cd or dvd. A great live show just a couple years before he died.DsilCaribe wrote:any john denver fan should by his CD "Celebration of Life: The Last Recordings" of the very cheap "Best of John Denver" (usually shelved in the discount CDs) because they were his last recordings and were new interpretations of his hits and extremely moving, considering that he re recorded them just a few months before he died. agreed. . . .he does such a good job with all his songs in that concert, especially "I Guess He'd Rather Be In Colorado"tdparrothead wrote:I would also suggest the Wildlife Concert either on cd or dvd. I bought the "Best of JD" at Kmart last Christmas for myself and haven't even opened it. Now, y'all have gotten me in the mood to listen to it... Where is that CD?!?DsilCaribe wrote:any john denver fan should by his CD "Celebration of Life: The Last Recordings" of the very cheap "Best of John Denver" (usually shelved in the discount CDs) because they were his last recordings and were new interpretations of his hits and extremely moving, considering that he re recorded them just a few months before he died. P.S. Always been a John Denver fan even tho it wasn't cool. "Country Roads" was our theme when we lived in West Virginia... "Annie's Song" was a favorite lullaby for at my son's bedtime. Even though it's meant for a lover, it works for a parent/child relationship: "You fill up my senses like a night in the forest, like the mountains in springtime, like a walk in the rain, like a storm in the desert, like a sleepy blue ocean, you fill up my senses, come fill me again." You gotta love nature to appreciate that one.

To each their own but Bob Dylan and Townes Van Zandt are among my favorite songwriters that have ever lived. I'm not sure how much Prine you've heard but I'm guessing it hasn't been very much.DsilCaribe wrote:I have always thought John Denver was both the best lyricist and songwriter that ever lived . . .for John Prine though, i must say that he's good but IMO he's no John Denver (as strange as that sounds). regarding how much Prine i've heard, i've heard enough to make my decision that John Denver is clearly a better songwriter IMO. Im not saying John Prine is bad, in fact im saying anything but that, I'm just saying i personally think John Denver is the most talented lyricist (maybe 2nd to Jimmy Buffett) and probably the best songwriter that lived.

I'm quoting you because I'm addressing what you said. No need to get upset about it but it seems I can't do that without you throwing some sort of hissy fit no matter how polite I am so... And no, you didn't ask who my favorite songwriters are but in the context of replying to you, I included them in order to make my point.
That's fine and you have every right to your own opinion, I'm just saying I disagree. In my opinion, John Denver is on the complete opposite end of the spectrum when it comes to the best songwriters that ever lived. Townes Van Zandt, Bob Dylan, John Prine and John Lennon, he ain't. Again, just my opinion, when it comes to the best songwriters of all time, there's LOTS of writers I'd put well ahead of John Denver.DsilCaribe wrote:regarding how much Prine i've heard, i've heard enough to make my decision that John Denver is clearly a better songwriter IMO. I'm interested to see if you can respond without resorting to your usual slings, arrows and personal insults. I certainly hope that you can. People can like different artists and still get along but you seem to take great issue with that, no matter how eloquently the differences are stated.

what i find very intersting Jon is that you take the time to add this later, after you've posted what you originally posted above, and still genuinely care whether or not I can respond without using "slings." Honestly Jon, I'm flattered that you care so much about me, cuz i can't say i can reciprocate that.Jahfin wrote: I'm interested to see if you can respond without resorting to your usual slings, arrows and personal insults. It's called an "edit" and there's really nothing the matter with it. I thought it worthy of pointing out since, generally when someone disagrees with you (particularly me), you usually find it necessary to start hurling insults. Oh, and by the way my name is not Jon.DsilCaribe wrote:thats cool with me!
