i wouldn't worry too much about the time between shots, the real killer is "shutter" lag on digitals....

Any suggestions on what is good shutter lag versus bad shutter lag? Or brands that are typically better than others?

then just go buy the sd400 and you won't be sorry
I agree. I would have gone with the sd400, but it was out of my price range by a little bit
4 mpixel sd300 is about 50 bucks cheaper
Or for $60-70 more, you can get the 7.1 MP SD500.
7.1 is way more than you'll ever need. anything over 3 can get you decent 8x10s. Not only will 7mp take up a lot of space, it will write a lot slower to the memory card, increasing the down time between shots and the files will be huge for uploading to any online site. We have a Nikon CoolPix 3200 and it's great for our needs - very small and only uses 2 AA batteries (I use rechargable). It does only have 3x optical but 99% of the time that's fine.
Here are some I took this weekend. These were taken at 'high' quality and not 'fine'

Not too bad for $150 and it can fit in your pocket.

I wont touch anything under 3 fps... but you really didnt wanna go an SLR route due to your budget and travel needs --- I'd better stop myself here before I post 20 pages on the subject and just say that....
dude, I was over sales in North AL for Wolf Camera back Pre-9/11 and left due to the Ritz Camera acquisition that followed the Ch. 11 your hometown boys pushed us into after misrepresenting numbers on some stores they sold us back in '98 (but I'm not bitter, no not at all

)... so if ya got any questions on all this (Too Much To Post On) and would like my opinion, as scary as it may be... Feel free to give me a call man...
Later Dude

Can be improved by holding the button down 1/2 way so auto focus is locked in

Cut it down to one category - Megapixel - You are only on this planet for one trip, so spend the money on one of the New SLRs, Optical Zoom becomes obsolete, as you can interchange lenses, and screw the compact size, if you're married, make your spouse carry it. Better yet, if you have kids, make them carry it, and threaten them with no dinner or chocolate if they don't take care of it. There ya go, problem solved, now go buy the Canon Rebel Digital SLR.

its not the auto focus function that's slow, its the the imaging time of the CCD.

That's just the type of comparison feature I was looking for. Unfortunately, my top two cameras both got 4.5 stars.

Of course it also brought in the Konica DiMAGE series.

We got a Canon PowerShot A510 today. Not the best in the world, but it's better than the disposables we've been using.
Our similar digital broke (twice) within the first year we had it. Was a gift.
