wouldn't it be nice to be 22 again and know all that we know now?

My new neighbor lived in Hawaii for years and always talks about it.
She says the poeple are really nice and it's not nearly as humid there as here in Florida.
She let me borrow her copy of a movie called "North Shore" telling me its the closet movie version of the way Hawaii is and the people really are.
And I was thinking it was like it was on Magnum.

OK. This is my relocation story...but unfortunately, it's not one that involved going south, but rather, going north.

When I was a single mom and my daughter was about 18 months old, I up and moved to Winona, MN from Denver, CO. I had a great opportunity for my company to pay relocation expenses and get paid my Denver salary with Winona cost-of-living. It was hard leaving my family, whom I had lived with since my daughter was born, but I was hell-bent on taking care of myself. So, off I went.

I was there for 10 months. It was miserable. Freakishly humid and hot in the summer with all kinds of scary bugs. Frigid and cold in the winter. To top it all off, I didn't have a car, so I hiked around everywhere with child-in-tow (via stroller and bicycle). The people in the town were not friendly. It was the kind of town that no matter how long you lived there, you were always an outsider if you weren't born there.

BUT...the good part is that when I lived there, I really got to know Matt better (oh the long distance bills) so when I moved back, we really appreciated being together. So, the moral of the story is, even though the location sucked, I definitely wasn't afraid to take the risk, and it all worked out in the end.

Waikiki and Honolulu resemble Magnum, sorta. But the real Hawaii, as your neighbor points out, is very different. And wonderful.

On my first visit there, I was on the ground for just one full day. I was up before sunrise and on my third stop, at Kailua, sitting in the parking lot, checking the map for the next stop. OBVIOUSLY a tourist.... Deathly white skin, driving a Mustang convertible, reading a map..... A local lady walked up to the car and asked if I was a visitor (as if she couldn't tell... ), and upon hearing that I was just there for that one day, she offered to take me on a tour of Oahu for the day. I politely declined, because I had my schedule kind of set, but I was astounded that she offered such a thing at all... to a complete stranger..... That was the moment that I knew Hawaii was more than just beautiful scenery...

'Course, the local folks I've had the opportunity to meet in KW have been great, too! :D

As far as "Wino's" how good of a story you think you can come up with to talk people out of better tips :pirate:

In line with that.. the funniest thing I've seen so far was a job listing in this weeks classifieds down there... it started off something like this...

CARPENTERS WANTED
Looking for hardworking & sober individuals with experience and own tools...

GULFBREEZE: Very Cool story... thanks for sharing and I know I'm destined to wind up back down there... I've known it for years now... out of all the places I've considered or lived in the last several years... they were all part of a larger plan that would eventually lead me back to FL... it's where I belong in my heart... made too much of a connection growing up there... and I've missed it ever since... heck, the only reason my family moved back here from Florida was cause my grandfather was in bad health at the time... and both my parents have expressed "doubts" (not so much regrets for their reasoning) because they know that ALL of us would have been better off staying... for various reasons... I guess thats why, I find I catch more slack off outsiders than I do my own parents when discussing the matter -- I guess they understand the connection cause they feel it as well... I've asked them numerous times why havent they considered moving back and even they admit... they have no reason not too consider it at this point... but it requires that initial step and I dont know if they have it in them any longer

CHARLIE: I cant say anything about the humidity... I've got plenty of it here already :D

STEVE: We may see ya there... "in theory" of course  Perhaps were destined to be neighbors... So how is workin in Anniston going?? :D
