YAY!! I leave on Monday for a week in lovely Playa del Carmen!!
We've pretty much decided to wing-it while we're there and not make any formal plans. Everything else in our lives is so over-planned and over-scheduled we're probably going to spend most of the time on the resort, just hangin' at the beach and pool.
BUT, I know I've heard from some of y'all of things you've done in Playa or Cozumel. I doubt that we'll be adventurous enough to head up to Cancun while we're there, so M'Ville is pretty much out.
Sooooo, with that...where'd ya go? What did you do? Was it worth it?
And "E", this means you too! Tell me all the nifty Cozumel things you recommended the other night!

Playa del Carmen
I was done in Playa last April w/ my wife and we had a great time. We staye at the Mosquito Blue which is a good place to stay. Make sure you get a room with a balcony on the second floor. Well worth it. May not be child friendly. If I had to choose a second place to stay it would be the Hotel Mar Caribe.
A day trip to Tulum is a must from Playa. Tulum is just a 30 min drive south. We took the Colectivo Vans to Tulum. These are shared shuttles to the ruins. They are easy and cheap. Just $2.00/person each way and admission to the ruins is about $10. Compare this to $50.00 per person tours.
Have fun. Get some snorkeling or diving in too if you can. Excellent reef.

We're staying at the Barcelo Maya. Came very well recommended from some fellow BNrs.Playa Hombre wrote:I was done in Playa last April w/ my wife and we had a great time. We're definitely doing some snorkeling, and so far, Tulum looks like the ruins we'd like to see most.
Thanks so much!

I don't have their numbers, but I'll send a PM.land_shark3 wrote:Do you have CRC or JaneLovesJimmy's numbers? They were down there last year. I think they just might know of a few bars to visit.
I know the Blue Parrot in Playa seems to be a must see. And E had a few Cozumel recommendations, but I can't seem to remember them at the moment.
We're also going to try and hunt down some yummy Tequila Liqueur that our friends brought back when they went last year.

When I was in Cozumel we rented a VW convertable for 1 day (place was located near the pier where the cruise ships come in) and drove around the whole island. It was pretty cheap as I recall and it was a great way to see the beaches on the other side of the island. No tourists!
I am trying to remember, but I think we hit a place called San Fransisco beach... all locals. Had a very primative tiki bar ...but we didnt eat the food. Meat was stored in an ice chest!
Also went on a few snorkeling expediations which were AWESOME.... beats the eastern/western caribbean for underwater views.
Just be careful @ the gas stations...the prices on the pumps change at the whim of the attendent!

Take a taxi to Cancun. It's not that expensive and the ride is about an hour or so. Take a "BoozeCruise" from Cancun to La Isla Mujeres. The boat ride is a blast and once you get to the island, you have dinner and a great show. They also have a mechanical bull. That's fun while your hammered. I HIGHLY recommend it. I also went snorkeling in Cozumel. That was fun too.

agree! but you can snorkle, dive and swim with the dolphins on Isla Mujeres and there are Myan Ruins there that (if you read A Pirate Looks at 50) you'd know Jimmy and children visited.sailingagain wrote:Take a taxi to Cancun. Funny you say that. The place I stayed was all inclusive. Every night, we had this awesome buffet. The best thing about it...12vmanRick wrote:TEQUILA
It had it's own "tequila table"!!! How cool is that? Nothing but bottle after bottle and shot glasses of all different types of tequila. Me and the ex would just grab a bottle and take it to the table.
Yep...many ugly nights.

dude.. we stayed in Tulum at the Bahia Principe.. and ours was the SAME way!!! One night I walked by this barrel of tequila, shot glasses and limes. I looked around and figured hey it's self serve and I was right.. 3 shots later we went to that HUGE buffet and then straight back to the barrel and then to the bar!sailingagain wrote:Funny you say that. It's so funny. The first night I figured something was wrong. I was too afraid to take a whole bottle. When I finally asked, they were like "It's okay. You can take it back to your room if you want."
