I pay 1.13 a litre ..... times that by approx 4 to get a gallon price

What you and the rest of the world outside the US doesn't understand is we have never paid the prices of the rest of the world because of all the help we give to foriegn countries. So now that we are gettting screwed at the pump it's time to cut back those "gifts" and decrease our taxes!
What you dont understand is that approx 80% of our fuel costs , are all sorts of federal and state taxes - they figure its an easy way to get money - we all need petrol

and let me add. I can't help what your government does with taxing gas nor mine for that fact but our government seems to see it fit to give away all our tax money that is collected to third world countries that do not give a crap about us, nor are they willing to help us in anything and have proven it in the war on terrorism and the gas price increase. No other country in the world gives away so much resources and money to other countries as the US.

fuel taxes go into the highway trust fund to pay for more highways so we can drive even more, generating more taxes....
Not quite... Fuel Taxes go into the Highway Trust Fund and get used to make the federal deficit look better than it really is..

(and yeah, some building of roads)

Ummm.. Side.. an Intrepid is not a full-sized car. A '64 Lincoln or a '76 Impala is a full-sized car. An Intrepid is a mid-size.

I think it was like $2.17 when I filled up yesterday. I hadn't filled up in a few weeks and I was happy to see it's no longer $2.33! Anyway, I have a little Dodge Neon.. But I call her Nellie! I usually go about a week and a half on a tank of gas. I have no idea how many miles she gets. I'm a girl! I don't look into these things. All I know is to tell dad when she needs an oil change!

I am guessing you don't write down the mileage and the oil changes and the other servicing stops in a little book either...

There's a book?
My car is a company car. Not my car; not my maintenance/insurance.

I just know I need an oil change once a month.
So it gets done when I need to get out of the house.

Duuuude...
I have the mileage books from every car I have owned (helped that I got my Impalas from the folks when I was in college). Pretty much every gas fill, every oil change, every brakejob and tuneup going back to 1968. Kinda cool to look at.

do you have socialized medicine? if not what are all those taxes going towards?
I don't, I pay well over 350 / month (about 455.495 AUD for you) for medical coverage.
we don't get taxed to death to pay for socialized medicine [thank god]
