John Prine Plays Bonnaroo
On Friday, June 10th John Prine took the stage of Bonnaroo to the roar of 5,000 fans crammed into “This Tent” while another 2,000 stood outside in the pouring rain. Prine played an hour and half set featuring plenty of old favorites and new tracks from Fair and Square.
"Heading toward the tent where John Prine was playing, I recognized a familiar song: "Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Anymore." My first reaction was, "Oh, another oldie." My second was to think about how a song about a war (it was Vietnam ) and shows of patriotism and piety had held up amazingly well. After the roar of applause, Mr. Prine allowed that he had stopped singing the song for 25 years. "I took it out of retirement by special request of the President of the United States ," he added. "It was not a formal request, but believe me, he's asking for it."
Moments later, a lightning bolt split the sky and a brief torrential downpour began. "I guess we have our answer," Mr. Prine deadpanned." - Jon Pareles , New York Times
