Tripping Billies

Post by mexcooker12 »

Anyone who was at last nights show, how well did Jimmy cover this tune. In Toronto it was a Neil Young cover, now its Dave Matthews, could this be a trend for this leg, doing different cover songs for his last song?

WHen he said he had "talked to Dave" recently does that mean they might get together and do a song together or am I looking to far into this?

I hope not, Dave Matthews sounds like he has a lower intestinal problem when he sings.

I Just listened to the MP3 again and the way he says he has talked to Dave about some other things does get me very curious...

All I have to say is WOW! :o

I hear those that say he MUST end with is own song (what about Carolina in My Mind or Brown Eyed Girl from the 1998 tour?), and that he MUST end with a slower song.

This was a great tune to pick to end the show. I'm still singing it in my head this morning. I'm not sure why people think he's selling out by playing it. Dave Matthews is another American balladeer, just like Jimmy, and it's fun to hear him play something different.

I think it was one of the best shows I've ever been to.

yes i have it and i like it alot better than the last album. Some good tracks: Stolen Away on 55th and 3rd, Louisiana Bayou, Dreamgirl, Smooth Rider are my favs. definitely worth a listen.

i just saw him live at Bonnaroo and he did a cover of the Zombie's "Time of the Season" I hope I can find it - cause it was with the Allman Brothers too!

wow - a jimmy & dave duet - NICE IDEA!

Here is one story I found.

http://members.aol.com/dmblyrics2/dmbly ... ipping.htm

This is just one guys opinion of the meaning.

"Basically, everyone was tripping on a beach in South Africa, and
they were stopped by a "Billie," which is slang for a cop in South
Africa. No one was wearing anything except for towels, and apparently
Dave handed the Billie his towel, thinking it was his gun.

The other explanation is that a "Billie" is simply slang for a hillbilly and
they're all tripping on who knows what, out in the woods. Note the special
lines involving dragons being smoked (dragons, being a type of smokable drug)
and tequila. Alongside this explanation is how the song got its title: as the
rumor goes, either Jane Matthews or Boyd Tinsley's girlfriend thought the
song sounded like "hillbillies tripping on acid," hence the title, Tripping Billies."

Here is a quote about the song from dave...
"That song ["Tripping Billies], its name inspired by a girlfriend who said it sounded like 'hillbillies on acid'..."- Dave Matthews

we were above
you standing underneath us
we were not yet lovers
dragons were smoked
bumblebees were stinging us
I was soon to be crazy

eat, drink and be merry
for tomorrow we die
'cause we're tripping Billies

we're wearing nothing
nothing but out shadows
shadows falling down on the beach sand
remembering once,
out on the beaches we wore
pineapple grass bracelets

so why would you care
to get out of this place
you and me and all our friends
such a happy human race
'cause we're tripping Billies

we are all sitting
legs crossed round a fire
my yellow flame she dances
tequila drinking oh our
minds will wonder
to wondrous places

so why would you care
to get out of this place
you and me and all our friends
such a happy human race

eat, drink and be merry
for tomorrow we die

DMB will be in CT this weekend for two nights in hartford - sat/sun. however, they will have a free day on friday - the day JB and the band will be at mohegan sun.. hmmmm.

also, for those of you who don't know, buffett was supposed to guest during DMB's FL gig for the Vote For Change tour, but things got mixed up at the last moment. apparently they had a dressing room and everything ready and were supposed to maybe cover 'brown eyed girl'.

Yes (But in all fairness, the band is from Charlottesville, VA)

And he didn't live in south africa that long. He moved to the u.s. when he was young and became an american citizen.

Mohegan in only an hour or so from Wallingford, where DMB will be. I think the Jake article posted on another thread eludes to the possibility.

I am not a big DMB fan to trendy & commercial for me. I do know that he lives out here is Seattle, WA (Queen Anne area) if you are familiar with the city. he has lived out here for several years. He was dating a girl that was a medical student @ The University of Washington who is now his wife. Even though I am not a big fan of his music he does get involved & do alot for the community.
