BEG, I have noticed when Jimmy's voice is not in the right range he tends to "talk" the song more. You could be absolutely right about him being uncomfortable doing songs that are not in his range.

I'm sure it takes a bit of rehearsal to pull some of those old songs out and make them right. Seems as the concert leg goes on, songs tend to sound better than some of those first nights of the leg. Just the logistics of having the guitars tuned for certain songs could determine some of the setlist.

I do want to hear "He Went To Paris." Wish that one hadn't been cut by the curfew. Maybe tonight is right.

ugh.. "he went to paris" was going to be played? that makes me sad... and i think the buffett could have done one more. all the shows that i've seen mid-week have great woods have gone past 11pm. what's a few thousand to jimmy? anyway, i have no complaints besides that. fantastic show, great weather, and good company - can't be that.

at least it wasn't "nautical wheelers" - then i would be real sad.

wonder if the weather will hold for tonight... looking like rain.

Also, these tours lately are all about SYKBH and money. Believe me, if I were Jimmy I probably would promote Margaritaville Tequila, Margaritaville Resturant, Cheeseburger in Paradise, Sirius Radio etc. but last night was the first time I saw a fight at a Buffett show.

Interesting side note. There was a couple next to us in the parking lot that have been married for 53 years. They first saw Buffett at the Fox in Atlanta over 20 years ago. They said they have been to atleast 25-30 concerts and were at one of his surprise concerts in Key West. They love going but mentioned it has changed drastically. They were mentioning back in the day he never used to do as many covers and they never saw people fighting in the parking lot. They said it was much better when it wasn't so commercialized. They weren't complaining that it has gotten that way because they mentioned they would do the samething if they were him. The one comment that did stick though was after the concert they said they felt like they just walked out of a Karaoke bar.

As far as Jimmy doing cover and "expanding his horizons" I look at that as "ball washing". Jack Johnson did a Buffett song so now Buffett has to do a Jack Johnson song. Buffett did a DMB song, so now Dave will do a Buffett song. Thats all hogwash. ANYBODY that has EVER been to a live music performance of any kind last night heard that Tripping Billies sounded like something I would here on a cruise ship. It was really bad.
Since I have been so badly trashed on this forum, I only want to say that I agree wholeheartedly with Parrot Monkey, and those who have supported his comments.

My wife Peg and I were so disappointed with the setlist, and the homogenious, lackluster performance of the JB and the Reefers, that we left prior to the encores.

Of course Jimmy can go on playing his SYKBH setlist as long as people are willing to pay their money to hear it. However, if you are a longtime fan of JB and his music, you KNOW how much depth he has in his back catalog of music, and how little of it he still is performing. Overall, the shows are really becoming threadbare, stale, and downright lazy.

Monday night's performance at Great Woods was one of the saddest musical events of my adult life, in that I got the distinct feeling that the Jimmy we used to know and love had been replaced by a "Stepford Buffett" who is obviously more interested in money than music.

B.
(joke) How about some cheese with that wine? (joke)

You can complain all you want about how bad the show was. If you think Jimmy is doing a bad job performing don't go to anymore shows, it just makes it easier for me to get tickets :P

**Once again not trying to be a smart @$$ to you B. I'm just commenting back on your post **

My dad called me halfway through the show on Sirius Monday night and said Jimmy stunk (I was in New Orleans getting ready for a show). Long pauses between songs and the songs stunk. I asked him what songs stunk, he said for one Schoolboy Heart - a song he basically hates. He wonders why Buffett does songs like that along with Lighthouse and a few others. I asked him for more details but he was just disgusted. "He's doing songs that obviously nobody cares about. You can hear it in the silence of the crowd. He needs to do some older tunes (by this he means anything from Hot Water to 1973 ha ha) that are not so popular (Brahma Fear, etc...) and that are good, not this crap he's doing. And what's with the long pauses between songs?"

Then he told me Jimmy was in Key West and again mentioned the long pauses between songs. My reply was If Jimmy is in Key West he's probably loaded. I didn't know where Jimmy was playing. I've been out of it for a while and I'll really be out of it soon since I'm going on tour. I guess he just thought he was in Key West.

And he wondered about the covers. He said Brown Eyed Girl was good. My reply was He's been playing that song so long it just sucks now. Who cares if he plays that song. Who cares if he plays Cheeseburger of M'ville. Or a handful of songs he always plays. Why bother? Do something else! He needs to stop playing BEG. There are TONS of other songs of his own he could be playing and he plays that stupid song. Ha ha, I love Jimmy's version of it but come on! Do something else! Then he asked me about Lighthouse and I told him I'd never heard it. He said I hope you don't - it stinks.

I'm still disgusted with the fact that Jimmy isn't even playing the title track of the book and tour and hasn't ever bothered performing Island Fever - a song that would fit in perfectly with this tour theme wise.

But I do recall Jimmy saying way back at the start of this tour something along the lines of No new album to promote so we're just gonna have fun - hence the bizarreness of the setlist. Piece Of Work? Probably the weakest track on License To Chill. But whatever. Maybe live it's better. That's how I felt about all of the songs from Off To See The Lizard on that tour. Once I saw the show I felt better about the songs. Too many keyboards on the record was my complaint. But at the show the songs were normal sounding. More guitars.

And live is where it's at.

I made a post a while back about all the covers Jimmy has recorded and it amounted to something around 80 songs I think. And that was counting LTC. That's amazing really but not when you consider The Beatles and The Rolling Stones when they started out. And now the Stones are still performing covers at their shows. Granted, they're mostly older tunes but they do pay tribute to their inspirations. Obviously Jimmy enjoys the tunes he covers, otherwise he wouldn't play them. I remember I was somewhat put off by the fact that he covered another Grateful Dead song for LTC and was then completely floored by what he did when I finally heard it.

So there you go. Maybe Jimmy should name his next studio record Pleasant Surprise.

Anyone know whatever happened to Man Overboard?
