Question about Freddie & the Fishstick's

Post by amollie »

I just finished rereading Tales from Margaritaville (probably for about the 10th time). After Googling around a bit I found out JB sometimes performs using the Freddie & the Fishsticks name to keep the crowds a little more manageable. But I was wondering about the Freddie mentioned in the story (I forget the exact title) but it's in the second half of the book, and unlike some of the fictional stories about Tully Mars, and Slade Patterson this one is written in the first person and explains the first meeting between a young Jimmy Buffett and Freddie from Freddie and the Fishsticks. Since this particular piece was written in more of memoir, non-fiction style, I was wonder if Freddie represents another musician that we might have heard of. Does anybody know?

None of this ties into the book but perhaps it will help provide a little background into Freddy and the Fishsticks.

I'm not positive how many times Buffett has performed under Freddy and the Fishsticks but I'm pretty sure one of the times was in either Aspen or Denver during the 80s. Somewhere on this message board is a nice write up about it by someone that was there.

There is also a rare 45 ("Elvis Imitators") Buffett released under the name Freddy and the Fishsticks with songwriting credit going to Steve Goodman (according to the liner notes from Boats, Beaches, Bars & Ballads John Prine also had a hand in the writing of it).

In the 2 disc Steve Goodman recording, No Big Surprise, Steve performs Elvis Imitators and mentions Jimmy having recorded it and talks about how Jimmy used the Freddy and the Fishsticks name on the recording.

Freddy & the Fishsticks

Here's where Steve Eng's book might help but it's not handy. Freddy & Co are stagenames for an actual group of musicians. As I saw the Cinncinatti Kid last nite I'll put all my money on Gamble Rodgers. Anybody want to get in on this?

I recently picked up the 45 of Elvis Imitattor on e-bay, with S/H all of $7. I'm happy. The disk is labled "Freddie and The Fishsticks featuring The Jordanaires" by Steve Goodman and Michael Smith, MCA-51224, 1981. The B side is Elvis Imitator Part II by The Jordanaires. Thats about all I know. John

I have a few of the 45 rpms I have picked up here and there.

Amy Lee's first gig with Jimmy was joining "Freddy and the Fishsticks" at Cafe Brasil in New Orleans in 1991. 8)

Anyone ever seen any posters or flyers for Freddy and the Fishsticks? I swear there used to be one on the wall in the Storyville Tavern in M'ville - New Orleans a few years ago, but when I went back to check there wasn't. I have been trying to come up with an innovative way to frame/mount a 45 and a plain background would be too boring.

I heard "Elvis Imitators" for the first time on Sirius, Monday....I LOVED it! And I had company that day, one of them a serious Elvis fan and she listened to it with her mouth open, saying, "That's JIMMY?"

Same here, not to mention Prine and Goodman being a couple of my favorite songwriters of all time.

So what's Part II like? I wasn't aware of a 2nd version.

Elvis Imitator II is an instrumental by The Jordanaires, who were the backup band for Elvis.
