Radio Margaritaville on Sirius Article
From the Houston Chronicle: "Paradise lost, found on satellite radio. For some, heaven on Earth is a sun-drenched beach where the tropical tunes of Jimmy Buffett fill the air — all day, every day"

HOU CHRON SIRIUS article on JB
Lady who wrote it was rather cynical... She did not seem to like anything except Lyle Lovett... The 12 hours she listened to RM must have been pure torture for her... She needs an attitude check... and a margarita.

I thought the article was funny. In fact I agree with most of what Leanne Potts wrote. Even in the end she understands what it's about:
"But wait, now that I think about it, Radio Margaritaville is trying to sell me something. They're selling beach-themed escapist fantasies and they're selling nostalgia, which means they are selling my desires and memories back to me. And I'm buying, as are some of the 1.5 million Sirius subscribers who listen to Radio Margaritaville."
and concludes with:
"Buffett helps us pretend we've reached that mythical place. He's one smart businessman"

well that definitly sounds concrete, thanks for the insight looks like it's Sirius/Radio Margaritaville this summerLIPH wrote:The last time he played Jones Beach 2 years in a row was 1997/98. Since then he's only played the Beach every other year. He's cut back on his touring, Jones Beach is the smallest venue he plays on a regualr basis and he was there last year. He's not coming back this year.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA!
Oh come on, people. I didn't agree with the cynicism in the article, but I thought it was funny as He11!
I laughed a few times. Interesting article. I wish she'd open her mind a bit, she may find more things she likes in life.

I enjoyed reading it. The article shows she took a bit of time to give her observations about Radio Margaritaville. She kinda rides the fence.

Even if I were to listen to RM for 10 hours straight, I'd probably find something to complain about. Unless you are a serious Buffett fan, some of the JB selections can be odd choices. The casual Buffett fan may prefer they run through SYKBH 2-3 times a day.
I'm still waiting for a radio station that only plays songs I like. What did she expect? And despite her review, I find RM to be less "beachy" and "escapist" than it could be.
But it is a pretty funny drawing of Jimmy!

It was an interesting read, for sure. I do hope the cynical tone isn't a part of her everyday life though. She seems to be quite the talented writer. One thing I do have to fault her on is her reference to Chuck Klosterman. Knew him when he was starting out (in college and his first writing job)--he was a self-absorbed dork then, and he's a self-absorbed dork now. I will give him credit for being a smart self-promoter though.conched wrote:I enjoyed reading it. The article shows she took a bit of time to give her observations about Radio Margaritaville. Barmaid, play me some Buffett, I'm in the mood to get away.

She did have a real cynical tone from the start....
But I too could not listen to that for 12 hours in a row either.
She did get one thing right...Migration is a great song!
I have a cool recording of that song done at Key West several years ago, kind of a rag-tag version but not all done up. He likes Robert's steel drum intro so much he says something like "lets do that again!"...and he does. One of my favorite versions of that song.
