I agree. Every person who submits a resume to us gets a decline or acceptance letter. Nobody gets ignored. Everybody deserves a prompt response.
To me, it just makes no sense to burn any bridges. Sure, it may not have been a good fit at this time, but in the future, you never know. Especially in Gainesville, there's not a huge job market for this field. Burning bridges is never a good idea unless you're changing fields all together.

In 2002 I was unemployed for nine months. I applied for approx. 300 jobs. maybe five had the decency to send me any kind of acknowledgement that I had even sent them anything.

We have a pretty well stocked IT department. My IT guys rule...except they keep firewalling the message boards I like to frequent
