if you have a firewall and if you use a security key to access your wireless, it's secure but most people are CLUELESS about how to do it right.

The thing with unsecure wireless connections is just that. They are wireless and open to the air...just like radio is open to to reception to anyone with a reciever....It is not stealing to tune in to a radio station.... that is how some people see it.... they might compare War Driving to driving around to find a "new station" as to searching the dial on the radio for a new channel....or using rabbit ear or other antennae to pick up TV or short wave....It is all in perspective... Granted a person pays for the service....but when the person bought the service did they know or were they told that this was a possibility???
IMHO, The wannabees and the script-kiddies are THE WORST!!!! Most any REAL hacker is not malicious and will not harm most people.....they go after challenges...just to for example say they hacked "Intel" or the "CIA" or whatever... or maybe somebody's system just to prove it could be done... Alot of them have become legit and have or work for businesses to test security programs and what not.
Then there are crackers....now they have to be watched for according to some.....but what a cracker does in my opinion is find ways to unlock programs and get them free.
EXAMPLE The guy that found the code for GTA that shows the sex scene.
EXAMPLE you need a program or want the full version of the game, but the program is only good for 14 days (or whatever) or the trial game will not let you access all levels, and you cannot afford the price of it .....All you need is a Key Gen or "crack" ... which can usually be found on the net if one knows where to look... you d/l the program or the game and get the appropriate key or crack and iinstall it....you have the full working program.... Stealing??? no doubt
EXAMPLE: Sony spent God only knows how much money on an encryptions system on their music cds to prevent them from being copied... That particular encryption system could defeated with a something people usally have in their house and nearby or on their computer desk that normally cost less than $00.99.
There are malicious people out there as we well know that do nasty things online from writing malicious code to spamming to backdooring and turning people's puters into "zombies" and spamming to child p*** and identity theft.
Then there are the guys that fight them.....There was more or less a "hacker war" going on a while back...(I think it was mainly script kiddies
could be wrong) that was more or less world wide...can't remeber when it was but it was interesting to see who sided with who.....as countries....

I'm glad someone actually knows that!

That is the point in why some of the cracking is done. Granted, most of it is because no one wants to pay for anything, but in instances like that, cracking Sony, or anything that has to do with that type of encryption is to drive home that blatant fact that if it it created by a human, it will also be cracked by a human. There is no encryption that cannot be broken. It's been proven. It's just a matter of how much effort would actually take to break it. Sony and the other megahouses make such a concerted effort to sound like they are 'foiling' the hackers. They aren't. At all. The exact day encryption scenarios like this are released, it is a free for all of 'legit' hackers to crack it. It's actually a game, and actually quite amusing to see who and how it can be cracked first. The megahouses and legislature have simply not caught on to this apparently.

and I wish people would stop calling these people hackers. They aren't. They are criminals, and it is just wrong to even consider these people in the same league as a hacker.

There have actually been several. If it's the one where it started to bleed into public and involved a lot of different authority bases, it was back in the late 80's, early 90's. There were a few script kiddies, but that was a whole different ballgame back then. It was different security, different tools, and most of the government had no idea of everything that was going on. Hacking was in the news on a regular basis. Around here, it was colleges, hospitals, and local governments. But it also depended on where you were; there was a pseudo hierarchy in place back then as well, and a lot of 'hackers' worked a lot closer with each other than they do now.
But we've all grown up, and hopefully are doing some good by doing what you said, working to combat the wanna-be's now.

Hey Sam...tell Sy about the poor little Naugas!
Certainly....
Sy, I think you know already know about the naugas, if not, here ya go ... Naugas are cute little loveable and cuddly creature that comes a country in South America. The only place they are known to live and the destruction of the rain forrest is ruining their habitat. They are quite harmless and are killed for one reason only ...sort of like baby seals are... The naugas just lay around like the baby seals do relaxing and playing and eating and breeding and raising their young. ( DON'T EVER GET CLOSE OR APPROACH A NAUGA IN BREEDING SEASON!!! That is the only time they have ever been known to be vicious!!! Several of the hunters found this out the hard way!!! Luckily for the hunters... they learned quickly!!!)
The men go out with these clubs or bats and beat them in the head until they are stunned. Then they skin them alive..If they are dead then they throw the dead ones away....something to with endorphins or something, and what it does to the skin.....All they want is the skin....and they just throw the carcasses away....but I have heard that they finally found a market using the carcasses as that cheap pet food.....
Would you please contribute or be interested in the plight of the poor little naugas and put a stop to the madnees???

They are a cute, cuddly, little loveable creature that lives in the rain forest in a country South America.( I forgot the name...

brain fart!!!) I don't think anyone has ever seen a live one outside the rain forest ... for some unknown reason they die shortly after being captured .... no zoo has ever been able to get one. No photographer has ever been allowed into the area....

Rick,
I can understand the PW protection but most anyone can generally crack those in no time with a "dictionary" program, as most people don't create a proper pass word or think no one will ever crack or break it.....
How do you properly set up a firewall on a wireless system???
I know PGP is the best or was the best encryption system out there at one time....but it was only for emails wasn't it???
Now the new wireless set up, from what I understand it is less vulnerable than the previous generation is....

This was a key, not a password..
Use mac addressing to assign DHCP

Oh I know what naugahyde is as in fabric, I've seen some occasionally on sale on Ebay, I was just trying to figure out if this was a reference to some other thread or something I had missed
Am I really too young? Wow, I haven't heard that in years!

The naugas first appeared in the Tree huggers thread.

My router acts as a firewall.... and the only two machines allowed on my wireless network are the two with my mac addresses
and I have it encrypted....

Easiest and quickest way is to go into the web interface of your router and set up a 128bit encryption key and have it automatically generated. You'll have to copy it down and put it in on the machine(s) you want to connect with, but that's the quick and dirty way to do it. There's a ton more to do with turning off and on ports, redirection, etc, but I'm way to tired to type all of that right now and make any sense
