Quick question if you pop in again... will there be a VCR and / or DVD player available for Buffett Fest?

Just sent out an email request for beads yesterday and I walked in today and the box is already full. And THAT's just from some of the people that worked yesterday. Roughly 500 strands in less than 24 hours. I smiled. :D :D

Threatening them with their jobs if they didn't contribute seems to be working rather well.

And John...heads up...or down...whichever fits at the appropriate time. Great job.

Information about the "Baghdad 1st Annual Buffett Fest

Posted: August 8, 2005 6:46 pm
by PHINdy PHan
Hi everyone.

I'm Sue from the Indianapolis PHC and I'm coordinating our club's efforts to help John (aka "Crash" in this forum) with his "Baghdad 1st Annual Buffett Fest 2005 Iraq".

Our club president sent out an email today to the Leader's List about this event.

A few general notes: The mailing deadline is Aug. 23rd. All packages must be sent via Priority Mail through the US Post Office. Maximum weight is 70 pounds. Height x Length x Depth cannot exceed 130 inches.

Our club has set up an email address for questions regarding the event. Please direct any correspondence regarding the logistics of getting your donations to John to "Buffettfest@phindyphc.com". I'm going to keep a log for John of what to expect. It will help him with his planning if he knows in advance what's enroute.

Thanks for all your efforts in helping to make the Baghdad 1st Annual Buffett Fest a success.

Sue

I finalized the draft and emailed it to phjim to review. Since it mentions BuffettNews, I really think he should have final say on whether we send it or not...

Dear Troops and Civilians,

Buffettnews.com (BN) is an online community of Jimmy Buffett fans from across America and around the world. Although the website is not affiliated with Jimmy Buffett or Margaritaville.com, the discussion board is one of the most active on the web space surrounding Jimmy Buffett and his music.

We appreciate the sacrifices you are making for our freedom. We hope that Buffettfest Baghdad will take your mind off of things, if only for a few hours. After all, that is largely the appeal of Buffett's music for many people.

Enclosed you will find a 6-foot tall inflatable palm tree. This gift represents a 3-year old tradition, which is explained below.

Because it is a nationwide community, there are always people from BN at a Buffett show. In fact, there are often more than 20 BN’ers at a given concert. In order to strengthen the bonds that tie the community together, a tradition was born in 2003.

That year, a group of regulars bought an inflatable palm tree to become the first official mascot for BN gatherings. They signed the tree and sent it on the tour. Being from Texas, they named this tree “Lone Star Palm” or LSP – the granddaddy of them all. LSP collected signatures at concerts around the country, and a new precedent was set when Jimmy Buffett added his.

In 2004, the tradition continued with “Junior Mint Palm”, or JMP. The name is a reference to the song “Fruitcakes”, where Buffett asks “Where did Junior Mints go in the movies?” JMP made it to over a dozen concerts, and was signed by Jimmy Buffett in June.

This year's tree is third in the line and was named "Son Of A Son Of A Palm Tree”, or SOASOAPT. The name is a reference to the song “Son Of A Son Of A Sailor”, where Buffett sings about his family ties to the sea. Jimmy Buffett signed this tree in January, and the members of the Coral Reefer Band signed it in February. SOASOAPT has made it to 18 Buffett performances through July, including Hawaii in April. People from all over the country have volunteered to take SOASOAPT to every remaining concert on the current schedule.

While the enclosed tree is not an official mascot, it does represent the community of BN. We hope that you will sign this tree as we have ours, so that it comes to represent you, too.

Gratefully yours,
The BuffettNews community

Hiya Sue and welcome to BN! Thanks for all the info. :D

Bill, great job. :D

BG...I don't know if we should name it or let them name it since it is their tree. Hmmm, maybe we could come up with some suggestions that they could use? Like Far Side of the World Palm, or Far Side Palm for short (not to be confused with my favorite comic, lol).
