college students who buy used books

Post by OceanCityGirl »

if you buy your used books online did you worry if it was a different edition. Is there anyway online to find out if there were changes from one edition to the next. I'm talking about a huge difference in $$

gone to 2 different colleges, never had a problem with it being a different edition as long as it was the previous one that is, the only difference is normally a few pictures, exact same text just a few pages off, id go to the publishers site and see if they say whats different sometimes they will sometimes they wont, but the professor can tell you if it will make a difference

can't wait to ask professor. If I"m going to order used need to do it now. I'm going to check the publisher's sites. These are not subjects that change. Just basic frosh classes like intro to psych, english 101, intro to alg, intro to philosophy.
But the difference is around $80. per book.

I went to a small, private school. There were no editions available through on-line stores.

Often the school campus bookstore has a list of the editions needed. Then you can compare the new and the used and see if they are the same...

Its pretty important that they are using the correct edition :-?

It would be my luck that the old edition wouldn't be sufficient and I'd be stuck with the old edition and having to buy a new edition.

That's just me, though. I don't think such things happen to other people.

the school my nephew is going to won't give them their book list til 2 days before class. I never heard of that. My daughter will be a sr. and she has always bought and sold her books online. Now I have two sons going. I can't see giving the books store the money if you can helpit. I'd rather give it to some poor college student who needs beer money.

I would recommend Half.com...I dont know if it more expensive there, than where you are looking, but you can put in the ISBN# and that way you can guarantee that its the right book. :D

Same here... the only ones I can get online are my architecture and interior design books, all the other ones are made specifically for my school.

My Alma Mater always lists the ISBN. Just make sure they match.

Our bookstore wasn't even open until a day or two before class started. There was no list; you went in and looked by class to see which books were listed under your professor.

My school bookstore sells used books and the new ones I'll buy through the bookstore I work at, they usually charge less.

My Dad lost his job in my 2nd year. Used books were my only option.

At both colleges I went to, the bookstores wouldn't resell a text if it didn't match what the instructor required for the course.

As long as you dont buy the 1st edition and the class is using the 18th edition its usually ok, most professors understand if you get the wrong book or buy the older book to save money. I have had the experience through several people that they will tell you what you are missing if its anything at all. If it were a law class it may be really important, but I think you said it was like psych 101 or something and that shits been around forever!

I wouldn't imagine it to be a big problem then...what books do you need maybe I have them, I have an old psych book several in fact and possibly english as well
