Woman Gone Crazy on Caroline St. is about a Transvestite!

Post by MargaritaMatt »

I was listening to an old bootleg show and he told the story about the song being about a transvestite at the Chartroom Bar. I didn't know that! I used to love that song, now it has a whole new meaning. Jimmy ruined it for me! Sometimes it is better to not know the truth about events that cause songs to be written.

Yeah, I learned that on the Trials of Margaritaville tour.

If anything, I think the song is funnier in that context.

No kidding, I could listen to those acoustic shows with just him telling the stories. Some people just have a knack for telling stories. And to boot, Jimmy has lots of good stories to tell.

If you're looking for some good stories, try and track down a copy of Jerry Jeff's 60th (I think it's 60th, may be 50th) birthday show where Jimmy and JJ spin some great yarns.

Woman Goin' Crazy On Caroline Street
Written by - Jimmy Buffett & Steve Goodman
From - Havaña Daydreamin'

Chorus:
There's a woman goin' crazy on Caroline Street
Stoppin' every man that she does meet
Sayin' if you'll be gentle if you'll be sweet
I'll show you my place on Caroline Street

She claimed in a loud voice to be a dancer
But I don't think she's cut a rug in years
Listens to the jukebox for her answers
Slowly guzzles twenty-five cent beers

Talks about the men she's known and then some
She's seen them in her dreams and on the street
She slides her dapper legs from beneath the table
As if to reveal some kind of treat

Chorus

Her lover left her stranded in Jamaica
Just right now she can't recall his name
Perceiving she's the center of attention
And all the lurking eyes they look the same

Weather's got the shrimpers in a frenzy
They're horny and don't need a good excuse
Someone yells and things just start erupting
And in a flash all hell has broken loose

Chorus

When I woke up and looked around the barroom
She was gone and I was black and blue
So be careful when you go to swing your partner
Someone just might take a swing at you

Chorus (To Fade)
“Give me a woman who loves beer and I will conquer the world.”
- Kaiser Welhelm

"The call is a loud wulli-wulli, and there is much twittering at the drinking holes."

I consider myself a pretty big Buffett fan but I don't think I ever knew this. Considering the setting of the song I'm not really surprised though.

Speaking of which, I'm not sure if anyone's seen those "Story Behind the Song" type books in the bookstore but Buffett's tunes are just crying out for one. The only thing is, I think all of them I've seen are unauthorized. Either that, or VH1 needs to get him on a special two hour Storytellers.

Hi guys, if you go to the top link on this page http://www.buffettnews.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=35394
and download the east hampton show from 2000 there a lot of good stories, its one of those all acoustic benefit concerts, in which Jimmy doesn't play a single SYKBH. He also tells the Woman going crazy story, a pretty funny story about pizza throwing, and a few others. Its my favorite Jimmy show to listen to.

Great! The song has become my 3 1/2 year olds favorite. She requested it when we got in the car yesterday and made me play it over & over...she even knows the words! She has also been spontaneously breaking into a chorus of "Fins" complete with the visuals..../\.../\....
