When I first heard it...and many times afterwards, I wasn't thrilled with this album. I love Island Fever, but never cared much after that...Old Truth Teller, a Thousand Steps, Kinja Rules....ok songs...but just wasn't good to me...

until I read the book...I have a whole new appreciation for this album now and I actually kind like it now

I, too, have just finished the book. I listened to the CD while reading and it really added to the enjoyment. Now I love getting out the folder with the words to all the songs and singing along!

Did you notice that two of the songs on there have a section of the same music as Desdemona's Building a Rocket Ship, just have different words. One of the songs is Fat Person Man. You can just substitute the words something about loving cookes, she's got a crew full of rookies. It's going to be a hell of a blow! I cannot recall just which is the second one with the identical music. Jimbo's written so many songs, he's beginng to repeat himself! However, it's still the greatest stuff out there!

The art inside the CD cover is fantastic! That alone is worth the price of the CD! It is like a beautiful modern painting.

Its an ok album. I do see your point though about the songs repeating themselves.

But that is common when writing a musical. Often times the writer is inspired by something else they hear, believe it will fit in well, and use it. It's a tip of the cap more than copying.

But in this case, he's tipping his cap to himself!

True, but if the music fits...

Have you all looked at the enhanced portion of the CD? I had about forgotten reading on the notes that it was there and just watched it a couple of times. It begins with Jimbo doing a short melody he "accidentally" left off the original score. It is called The Green Flash of Sunset"--I think I got that right!

Then it goes on to show outtakes of the recording sessions, one of which had Jimbo doing the tango with an imaginary partner. Lots of clowning around. It shows Nadirah, Tina (or was it Heather?), Mac and Mr. Utley among others.

It was neat to watch with one exception. Mine had the movement of their mouths slightly out of synch with the words. That is so distracting!

The whole thing was interesting to see the backstage scene.

I read the book in the mid-80's and enjoyed it, I liked the album when it came out.

I'm disappointed that I didn't get to see the musical when it was playing in Coconut Grove or at the Atlantis.

Maybe there's still hope that the show will make it to Broadway?

I was not familiar with the book and musical until recently and was wondering, when did the play run and for how long?

For a couple of months at the Coconut Grove Playhouse in '98 and about 6 months at the Atlantis Hotel in the Bahamas in 2001. :D
