Hey Dude!

Over the past year or so I have noticed the word Dude has found its way into our vocabulary....to preface salutations, statements, questions and answers as well!
But Women calling women Dudes? Men calling women Dudes? I can can almost understand it from surfer boys in thier 20s... but a 50 year old man calling a 50 year old woman Dude... is ... bizarre!
It all seems very strange to me.... as I havent fallen into the Dude habit... but today it hit me... it reminds me of the 60s and 70s when the word Man had the same role!
My question is... how or why do we allow ourselves to pick up a habit in our conversation which has no value?

I use the word dude a lot. I think we had a discussion here one time and by popular vote, the women of BN (Hey that could be a specail edition of playboy) said they hated the word dudette.

As I recall, "dude" was very much a part of the vernacular back in the 60s and 70s too but you know what they say, "if you remember that time period you probably weren't even there" (or words to that effect).

I don't mind dudette. Usually I get called dude though by my BN/BW boys. I dunno. I don't have a preference either way because there's a lot WORSE things they could be calling me.

I did a search and we have 243 search pages of posts that contain the word dude.
Mal seems to be the largest propagator of the word as well.

Why ask why dude? Just do it!
I think I use dude for 2 scenarios...
Dude!! = holy crap did you see that!!!
or
Dude? = what the heck, why are you being such a pain in the butt?
~~~
On a similar note, my daughter asked me last night why I say "yo" all the time...
Common scenarios...
Keet: "Mom?"
Me: "Yo?" = yes, may I help you?
or
Me: Yo! = hey dude, what's up?
I have a couple of PMs to prove this.
Q: Is the word 'chick' no longer a part of our working vocabulary?
(Maybe that's why 'dude' is doing double duty...)
... btw I get more strange looks for using the word 'man' than for 'dude' ...
I use chicky-poo as well, as well as hoochie-momma.
